How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a single mother and I was given a small portion of land by my parents where I currently live. This led to wrangles between my brothers and me since they claim that ladies should not inherit land from their parents. It is my wish to fence this land to avoid my livestock from going to destroy their crops when I am not around. This will reduce the conflict they usually have with me since they have never come to terms with what our parents did.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by educating us through Baraza before enrolling and sending us the transfer. Making it unconditional enabled us to achieve our goals of owning some of the things that had seemed impossible before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on the vegetable business where I sell different kinds of vegetables for survival since I am a single parent. When I received my transfer, I spent KES 18000 buying some building materials like iron sheets, nails, and timber. I am planning to use these materials to construct a more spacious house for my family since the one we currently live in is small. In addition, I spent KES 22000 on the purchase of a dairy cow that unfortunately died after a short while, KES 5000 on the purchase of beddings to replace the old ones that we had been using and used the remaining amount on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On receiving the money, I was extremely happy and thanked God for the promise they had just honored. As soon as I confirmed the receipt of the message, I was ready to start budgeting for the amount as I had not planned on what project to start with. I could not withdraw the amount immediately but after a week, I visited the nearby shopping center where I withdrew with ease since every other person had withdrawn their own.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After obtaining the two heifers, I am currently feeling secure as the neighbor's cow might be taken by the owner at any time. This project has brought the biggest difference in my daily life, giving me peace of mind and shifting my focus from the fear that I had been having to other great projects that I can initiate going forward. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the generous support not only to me but the whole village as there had been a lot of changes witnessed in every household around.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After almost two years depending on my neighbor's cow that I had been keeping and producing enough milk for my household, I finally saw a need to buy my own. With KES32000 out of my first transfer, I managed to obtain two heifers that I am rear and hoping to see them maturing and producing milk in the future. Since I am alone in the house, I had to change a lot as most of the utilities I had been using were old. I obtained new bedding, a piece of new furniture, clothing, kitchenware, and also sufficient foodstuff at a total cost of KES9000. I also did a farm operation where I tilled my piece of land and in preparation for the planting season obtained all the required farm inputs worth KES 2220. I decided to save the remaining KES10000 that will be useful in buying other household goods that I could require before receiving the next transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm a single person with no children due to my health status that has not enabled me to bear any children.I haven't been able to afford better medication due to financial constrains. Sometimes I'm depressed due to this. Receiving this money means I will afford the right medication which hopefully will help me bear children of my own.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I have completed the days work. I weave sisal ropes which is very tedious. I always leaves me very tired when am done. I take time to rest in the evening .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been lack of finances. Affording the right medical attention is really a challenge for me. Due to this, I haven't been even able to live a productive life. I'm a casual labourer earning at most 5 dollars a month which is too little to cater for basic needs.
