How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I simply aim to ensure that my farm provides enough to meet my basic needs, particularly food. Additionally, I hope to have access to the necessary medical treatment and regular check-ups as required for my health.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I'm truly thankful for being chosen to receive the transfer. I appreciate having the freedom to plan and use the funds based on my needs, rather than being instructed on how to use them. In my view, this program was executed excellently, and I wouldn't make or propose any changes to it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with both high blood pressure and diabetes, requiring regular hospital check-ups, which come with a financial cost. My children have been kind enough to assist with these expenses, even though they have their own family responsibilities to handle. When I received the second transfer, I allocated $200 towards my medical bills, easing the burden on my children. Additionally, I used $100 to cover my grandchildren's school fees, and the remaining funds were dedicated to purchasing food, which had become quite expensive due to challenging economic conditions at that time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. Though it did not come as a surprise to me, receiving this money was an affirmation that for once we were going to receive support as earlier promised. In the past we have had organisations making huge promises and later disappearing without honouring those promises. It was so full filling to see GiveDirectly honour their promise within a very short time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
A lot has changed in my life since we started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly. Buying a dairy cow was one great achievement that has really changed my life and that of my family. We now have enough milk supply within our household where we can even sell some to meet other emerging family needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When we received our first transfer we spent $420 to buy an additional dairy cow to be kept in our compound. We already had one that we earlier owned but we would always go without milk for sometime through the year. There was need to buy an additional dairy cow but with my old age, I could not raise enough money to buy one. I am so grateful that GiveDirectly enabled me achieve this dream earlier than I had expected. We now have enough milk for both consumption as we also sell the surplus to meet other needs of our family. We are five family members and this investment has really changed our lives and made us happier than we have ever been. It also gave me peace of mind having lost two of the cows that I owned to some strange disease . GiveDirectly has really fine a great job for me and my family. We used the remaining amount to buy food and other basic household needs for my family

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I am 84 ,and so as a result of old age and failing health I cannot engage in any meaningful economic activity that can give me disposable income. It is against this backdrop that I intend to buy a dairy cow worth $400 that will give me milk for household consumption and sell the rest to get income since I do not have another livelihood. I will use the rest of the money to seek for further medication in a better hospital like Tenwek Hospital, their services are much better and have qualified doctors, this money will assist me afford the hospital fees and get the best attention,I had wanted to go there initially but I did not have the money.I really long to restore my health and resume my normal life.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I used to stay alone and when I fell ill it was hard to fend for myself nor do household chores. My grandchild,Sharon came about a month ago to assist me because of my situation. I am old too and my failing health worsen the situation. I was so relieved when she came over to be with me, I am now happy and having an easy time except for my health. I used to be so lonely but now she gives me company and we share alot with her.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am currently having a challenge with my health. My legs are feeble and itch alot because of the swelling, I can hardly work and only goes for short distances although with alot of struggle.Recently, I went to Chelimo hospital but I have not registered any improvement, I am still under medication.Sometimes during the night I experience alot pain which disturbs my sleep.Iam currently indisposed and this has derailed me from engaging in my normal income generating activities and only depend on my grandchild whom I stay with to assist in my daily chores.
