How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
God willing, I am planning to start a second-hand clothes business. This will help with school fees and dairy keeping.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well to transform my life by improving my timber walled house to a permanent one.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My three-roomed timber walled house built years ago had its timber eaten up and its roof worn out. And for the past four years, I desired to renovate it but couldn't afford it. This is because I am s small-scale dairy farmer. And from the daily income after the sale of milk is usually spent on food and school fees payment.
Therefore, when GiveDirectly transfers came, my priority was on renovating my house. I, therefore, topped up my first and second transfers. Of this, I spent KES 16,250 on the purchase of Iron sheets, 21,000 on three trailers of gravel, KES 14,000 on two trailers of pebbles, and KES 7000 on a trailer of hardcore concrete. After the renovation of the walls and the floor, my house is now totally transformed from timber walled to a semi-permanent house.
Further, I spent KES 35, 000 on building my son a single-roomed semi-permanent house. This is because he is now a teenager almost completing high school. Therefore, I thought it wise to build him his own house because he didn't have one.
Additionally, I spent KES 22,000 on 3000 liters water tank. This will help in the storage of clean rainwater.
Lastly, I spent KES 10,000 on clearance of the last term's school fees arrears for my kids in high school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning around 9 am and I was in the house busy looking after my grandchild. As a result, I did not hear my phone ringing. I saw it later when I was done changing the baby's diaper. I was so happy when I saw the SMS saying that I had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was especially most happy because I knew my life and that of my family was now going to change.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer is going to bring a very big difference in my life and that of my family. With the plan to renovate the house, my family will hence have a nice place to stay in. I also plan to use some of the money in starting a small hotel business. With the business, I will no longer be idle and I will have a source of income. Our lives are thus going to change for the better all thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I plan to spend most of the money that I got from GiveDirectly on renovating the house that we live in. The house that we live in has grown old, we need to replace the iron sheets and the wood planks on the walls. We also plan to cement the floor. We have always wanted to do the above but we have not been in a position to due to lack of money. I am unemployed while my husband is casually employed at a private company that usually out sources tenders. Sometimes the tenders are not easy to get and this results to a lot of challenges and constraints to the company and its employees. It has thus been hard for us to make any developments because the little money that my husband gets from his job, most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for our four children. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly because we know that our dream is going to be fulfilled.

What is the happiest part of your day?
Most of my days have not been without sadness. I think very much about how I can better my life. I am usually under stress about my jobless situation and having no business me eats me up. I worry as I go to bed and all day long about what may happen since I have almost no one to rely on to provide for us, given that my husbands income cannot be sufficient.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Losing my job and resettling in my husbands rural home has been the hardest part of my life. I have to ask my husband to send me any money for my basic needs. He is working in the city and sometimes, he cannot afford to provide for us. Without an income, I am finding it hard to take care of my children well.
