How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing ten goats at a total cost of KES 50,000 is the goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. When I received the transfer I decided to invest in a goat rearing project. This is profitable since goats reproduce twice per year. It helps in case of emergencies since it can be sold easily. I look forward to having more goats in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to the poor in the community is what GiveDirectly does well. Most of the people who received the transfer spent it well. There were new houses that were constructed, payments of school fees and some of the people invested in the dairy keeping project. I do not find anything that GiveDiectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 on purchasing ten goats. I had a few goats before receiving the transfer. I had always wished to invest majorly in goat rearing projects but I did not have the money. When I received the transfer I decided to start the project immediately. Goats rearing project is very profitable and has a higher rate of return. Goats multiply faster since they reproduce twice a year. I will be able to meet the daily needs of my family and even gather for any emergencies since goals can be easily sold. I look forward to expanding this goats project in the future. I spent the rest of the money on meeting my household's basic items. I am so grateful because DiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home that evening with my family when I received an MPESA statement. When I checked, it was a receipt of cash transfer that we had been promised by Give directly officers. I shared the good news with my family members and we all celebrated and thanked God for the blessings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the purchase of a dairy cow. This has allowed me to save the amount I used to spend on buying milk in buying other household items. I am grateful to Give directly for the great support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk daily was costly since I had been straining because I depended on manual jobs to earn a living. Upon receiving the first transfer, I spent Kshs.45,000 in buying a dairy cow which provided us milk for some time. Though it was for a short period, am happy that in a few months it calf and we will be able to get surplus milk for consumption. With the remaining amount, I spent on buying foodstuff and clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a constant supply of milk to my family of 3. When I got married in 2015, I yearned to own a dairy cow for the production of milk to feed my family. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints, I could not afford one as I often use the profit I earn from my wines and spirits business to purchase food for the household as well as stock the shop. In a month, the business produces an approximate KES 10000 profit. When Givedirectly visited my house, I was excited because I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, for buying milk will come to a stop. I intend to use KES 40000 to purchase a lactating cow and my dream of a constant supply of milk to my household will come to pass.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I reopened the wines and spirits business in April 2021 after closing it for over a year due to stern government regulations. However, it didn't pick up instantly until October 2021 when the profits doubled. This was the instance that brought joy to my life as it renewed my hope in depending on business to support my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is a challenge I am currently facing. Ever since the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic, my business profit dropped by 50 % , for I had to close the business for 6 months because of the stringent government measures. I had to stay at home and use the profits I had accumulated to support my family of 3. I opened up the business earlier last year but unfortunately, it has not peaked as I run into losses on most occasions. This saddens me because I might end up shutting down the business at some point and I might end up bankrupt.
