How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a teacher by profession and since the government has introduced a new curriculum I would like to go back to college to upgrade my course so that I would be ready to teach the students the new system. The course would need some good amount of money and I believe that in a few months, the heifer which I bought would have reproduced and they will be giving us some milk which when I sell I would raise money for school fees. Alternatively, I would save part of my salary so that I would raise money for paying fees for the course. That's the goal which I got at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I like the fact that GiveDirectly is not associated with any political party. They perform the job so well and do not support any political affiliations. To me, no issue was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer which I received enabled me to make a huge step in my life. I spent KES 40000 of my second transfers on buying two heifers to rear them for milk production. I then spent KES 4000 on paying debt and the rest I spent on buying building materials for constructing a latrine. I am glad that I was able to build a good latrine in my compound.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the first transfer when I needed it the most. On that day, I had taken a loan from a friend only to get a message on my way since I was traveling. I was so happy and could not wait to get back home so that I could pay back at the exact date that I had promised to settle that debt. I had all plans in place and had to withdraw three days later after the receipt.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the new focus to further my education. I had earlier on tried pushing my parents to help in paying my college fees but they had been struggling to pay for my two younger brothers. I am glad that I can plan alone and pay my school fees in the future since I was able to make a great investment in livestock that I can later sell out at a profit.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living alone has never been that hard for me since the plans I have made hardly changed. On receiving the first transfer, I was set to hugely invest in livestock with the hope of later selling them out to raise my school fees. Currently, I am working as a teacher in a nearby school and even though the monthly salary is so small, I am glad that it has been sustainable. I had been pleading with my parents to help in paying my college fees but since I still have two younger siblings, it has never been possible since they are being facilitated as well. I managed to obtain three heifers at a total cost of KES 48000. They are in good health at the moment and I hope that they will grow fast enough to be sold out in the future. I also Settled a debt of KES 5000 that I had and used the remaining amount on obtaining a new outfit. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for reviving my dream of going back to school again and it is my hope that the second transfer will even do more.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean that I will be able to upgrade my education since I am a teacher by profession and depend on this to earn a living. I plan to do a proficiency course in education that is mandatory for every teacher and it requires a lot of money. I plan to join the 2023 intake and since it is still far, I will buy a calf and five goats as assets so that by next year, I will earn more money from them and be able to start the course.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful that I have a job and earn something however small. I have been able to support myself with the money and this has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am not yet fully employed by the government because I do not have the required qualifications and I have to teach in a nearby school under the board of management. The pay is less, KES 6000 cannot allow me to further my education and at the same time meet my needs.
