How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, my primary goals for this year and beyond are to finish the construction of my new house and to fully regain my health. I am grateful to have most of the building materials already purchased, and now I am awaiting the final transfer so that I can cover the costs of labor and any miscellaneous expenses.
I also plan to complete my medication and go for additional checkups to ensure I am fully recovered. Health is something I take very seriously, and I want to make sure I am completely well.
The thought of having a safe, new home and living a healthy, fulfilling life fills my heart with joy and gratitude.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What stands out most for me about the GiveDirectly program is the kindness and politeness of their officers. As an older person who only understands my native language, I am especially grateful that they have officers who speak my language. This shows a remarkable level of inclusivity and respect for everyone they serve.
I have no specific recommendations for GiveDirectly other than to encourage them to keep up the excellent work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received $450 from GiveDirectly, I felt incredibly thankful and delighted, as the support came just when I needed it the most. I was bedridden and weak due to illness, and I desperately needed medication. With $50, I was able to get the necessary treatment and some special food to aid my recovery. Thanks to this support, I am now much better and feel healthy and whole again.
Once I regained my health, I focused on my original plan to improve my living situation. I used $350 to buy construction materials to upgrade to a modern house. I currently live in an old manyatta, which is too small and unsafe for my family, including my two grandchildren who live with me. This new house will provide us with a safer and more comfortable space.
Additionally, I spent $50 to fence our compound, which has greatly improved our home’s security. Now, we have a clear, single entry and exit point, making our home safer and giving it a more organized and pleasant look.
I am deeply grateful to GiveDirectly for this timely support, which has made a significant difference in my life and my family's safety and well-being.

Excited, I knew I needed help to withdraw the money, so I immediately went to my assigned helper to assist me. The support from GiveDirectly meant so much to me, and I couldn’t wait to use the money for my needs. The happiness I felt was overwhelming, and I was truly thankful for the help.

The biggest difference in my life is the significant improvement in my daily life and overall well-being thanks to the support from GiveDirectly. Before receiving the cash transfer, I often faced food insecurity and skipped meals. Now, I can buy enough food, which has improved my nutrition and given me peace of mind.
Also, I can purchase building materials, bringing me closer to a more comfortable and secure home. Transitioning from my traditional manyatta house to a modern one fulfills my long-held desire for better security.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving $180 from GiveDirectly, I decided to prioritize my most pressing needs. First, I used $50 to buy food. This has been a great help because, at my old age, I am no longer able to work and depend on my children to take care of me. Next, I used $100 to buy building materials. I currently live in a traditional manyatta house, but I want to build a more modern home that will provide better comfort and security. This is something I have longed for, and now I am one step closer to making it happen.
Lastly, I spent $30 to go to the hospital. I was sick and needed medical attention, and with the help from GiveDirectly, I was able to get the medication I needed. I am truly grateful for this support, which has improved my well-being in so many ways.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The initial USD 154 will address the ongoing food shortages in my household and allow me to purchase essential household items, such as utensils and bedding.
With the remaining funds, I plan to build a brick house to replace the risky grass-thatched structure I currently live in. Any leftover money will be invested in creating a source of income for my family by acquiring sheep, which will provide future financial support through their offspring.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The food supplies donated by my father-in-law in May brought me great joy and relief, as they lasted nearly two months. This generous gift significantly eased my daily struggle to secure food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to my old age, I am unable to work and have been struggling to afford food. As a result, I rely on my children and other kind individuals for support, and at times, I go without food because of financial constraints.
Additionally, my grass-thatched house poses a risk during heavy rains, but I can't afford to build a more secure home for myself.
