How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would love to open a grocery store. Source the finest produce from the main market and set up a shop near my house. The best and healthiest onions, tomatoes, and coriander, just to name a few, will be on display at my shop! Only the greenest of greens would be sold, and so on, and hopefully, with that, the money will be consistent and our family can live the life it deserves.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly's foresight in believing that recipients can plan for themselves what is urgent and trustworthy has been life-changing. The impact that GiveDirectly has had on my life and the lives of other villagers is immeasurable! We will be eternally grateful to GiveDirectly as an organization and as a member of our family. GiveDirectly succeeds in making all recipients feel like they are part of a community that cares and loves them, and that in itself is a miracle.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Pentanguo Primary School can be counted as a beneficiary of GiveDirectly's generosity. I am a parent of eight children, six of whom are students at the school. They're in Class 8, Class 6, and two in Class 4, and each require $7 per term in tuition, whereas the 5th and 6th born, both of whom are in Grade 2, and require $9 per year in tuition. We made sure to use the funds to cover these amounts as well as the needs of the twins that make up baby numbers 7 and 8. Building a 2-bedroom house and a verandah was yet another way in which we allocated the transfers received from GiveDirectly. Aside from one of us tending to the three acres of land on which we grow cassava, maize, and other cereals, we both do casual jobs, with him earning $5 per day and myself earning $4, and what we harvest, we consume. GiveDirectly has completely changed the trajectory we were on as a family, and for the better. We have never been happier.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While selling water at a water project owned by a group of women who started a joint business, I received a message on my phone at around 5 pm. Upon checking, I jumped involuntarily after seeing the kind of information the message contained. It was the first transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. I was filled with happiness for receiving such a huge amount of money at once. I tried my best to contain the happiness so that the customers could not realize but I am not sure if they did not.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before receiving the transfer, we used to struggle as a family to make ends meet. My husband who is a casual laborer could not fully cater to the needs of our family of 10. This made me venture into some tiring businesses to support him in taking care of the family. I started making and selling charcoal as well as selling firewood to assist my husband. As of now, we are grateful for the support that we got from GiveDirectly because are now getting food and other basic needs than before. I have also taken a rest from the charcoal and firewood business. This is because of GiveDirectly who came to our rescue.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the first step was to pay a loan of KES 12500.00. I borrowed from a women association who were pooling money and lending out for a profit. I also paid KES 2500.00 to a shop where I used to take some food items on a billing basis. Thereafter, I bought a bed for KES 8000.00 and a mattress for KES 7000.00 because the ones I had were worn out and I wanted to upgrade the place to sleep on and enjoy the help I received from GiveDirectly. I also bought school uniforms for my six primary school children for KES 3400.00 because theirs were overused. Having settled those, I saved the remaining amount for the family's upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious house that can accommodate me and my family of 8 children. The small one-bedroom structure we are currently residing in has forced us to seek shelter from neighbors for my children. This has lowered our dignity and we have less control of the children when they are away. When I get this transfer, I am planning to spend KES 50,000 to construct a house. With a house that can accommodate my whole family, safety and security will no longer be a bother.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Nothing makes me happy than seeing my family healthy. Despite the challenges we have been facing, I am indebted that my husband and children have never suffered any serious health problems.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability due to unemployment is the greatest challenge we are currently facing. The daily wages of KES 500 my husband gets from his casual labor( laborer at construction sites) are all used on food and cannot sustain our other needs ( medical bills and school fees).
