How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a heifer. What motivated me to invest on this is that I have been buying milk daily which is so expensive for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village and sometimes to get this jobs is so hard. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including paying school fees. When I received the second transfer I found it wise to invest on dairy farming. When my heifer reproduce in the next few months, I will be no longer buying milk. I will save the money to spend on other household items. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on purchasing a heifer. This will enable me to cut the cost of buying milk daily which is so expensive. I also purchased two goats as a source of investment. The rest of the money I bought food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I saw my friend's Mpesa message confirming to him that he had received money from GiveDirectly. Though we weren't sure if it was true, I got curious to know if I had received it too and unfortunately I had not gotten it. Within a blink of an eye, I received a text too and to my surprise, it was a Mpesa message confirming to me that I had gotten money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed and I immediately stopped what I was doing, called my wife to come to accompany me to go withdraw it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I love education because I have seen people live better due to it. It has always been my struggle to educate my children so that one day they will also enjoy better living standards and support me at my old age. Currently, I have children in various schools and raising their school fees is so challenging with my scarce resources. Since I received my first transfer from GiveDirectly, the biggest difference in my daily life is being able to clear my child's school fee. I am happy that he was allowed to do his final exams meaning soon he will be out practicing his skills which will enable him earn a living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had been lucky to have bought a piece of land outside my father's compound which I had planned to relocate there with my family. I ran out of resources to build a house and take my family there thus my goal remained true in my dreams only. When I received my transfer, I took KES30000 to build a house on my new piece of land. I feel happy that I am soon transferring my family there thus increase my land for agricultural activities. I took another KES15000 to clear my son's training fee. I am happy he could be allowed to sit for his final exams thus will soon acquire his certificate and get into the practice of what he has been trained on to earn a living and support us. As a way of investing part of the transfer, I took KES3000 to buy a sheep since I am certain that it will keep growing and gives us offsprings that I can rely on for cash. I spent the remaining amount on my family's basic needs mainly clothing and food.
