How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have not been a proud parent when I allow my children to walk at night to find a sleeping place yet I don't move an inch at night. I felt I was careless with my children's' health and putting their lives at risk. It was not something I enjoyed but I did not have any option. With their ages, I was not allowed to spend with them in the same house according to our culture. This is why I used the money I got from GD to buy building materials for putting up the house. Now they sleep in their own house with their privacy-enhanced.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I feel GD did well in giving cash to everyone in the village without being biased. They did the selection in the best way independently without involving anyone. It was the best way to go about the selection. There is nothing they could have done better.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets and nails which I used to put up a small house where my children are sleeping. At least now I do not go through the stress I used to go through when they were going to sleep at night about their security. I also used part of the money to pay school fees arrears to reduce the balance they had in school. This is to avoid being sent home for fees arrears again. The rest I used on buying food to boost the stock of food we had left in the house and to hold a small birthday party for my children. I had promised them and had to fulfil the promise.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have assets in terms of goats. I believe that these goats will be reproducing and increase in number soon. Having them means that I have good security for my children's education who are still young and at lower levels of education. I will be able to sell any in case of any financial challenges like paying school fees for my children.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was overwhelmed with joy the moment I saw the transfer notification on my phone.GiveDirectly had finally honoured their promise by sending us the first transfer. I was thankful to them and I began to plan on how best I would spend this money to improve my livelihood.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a portion of the transfer on buying six goats which I am currently rearing in my household. I had no livestock but through GiveDirectly, their financial support has made me own some goats which are assets. In addition to the goats, I also acquired a solar panel to provide lighting in my household. This has relieved me the cost of buying kerosene daily for the small lamps that I was using. My children will also be studying comfortably with this source of lighting. I saved the remaining amount in our savings group that I am a member. I am hoping to accumulate my savings to start a food kiosk soon that will be generating income for me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Being a shopkeeper, I have a dream of owning a shop that will change my financial status. I have enough experience and I will be able to manage it smoothly. To achieve this, I will first invest in goat and chicken rearing projects. These will provide returns within a short period and I will use the profit to open the shop. I will also purchase oxen to scale up farming and also hire them at a fee.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happier in the morning when I live for work. Despite the little and inconsistent pay, I am motivated to work because I have a family to provide for. This makes me stronger and I put more effort to make ends meet.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My shop keeping job is not sufficient because of little pay that is oftenly delayed. This means I have to operate on debts to sustain my family. Once I get my pay, I clear the loans and the cycle continues. My family is suffering because I am not able to meets our needs fully. The only person who could be of help is my husband but his casual jobs earn him less than 1000 shillings a month.
