How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Now I have two dairy cows and an ox that I now own has transformed my life in a big way. I got some milk for sale which can enable me to cater to my daily expenditure, the remaining few liters are for my family's consumption, my children are now healthier than when I used to depend on casual jobs for a living. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for coming into my village. Being among the beneficiaries makes all the difference.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the fact that the grant issued by Give Directly is unconditional makes it so unique. One can use the money how best they feel without restrictions and again as I have said it is a grant hence you owe no one. Saying GD has done well will be an understatement. If I were a donor then I would replicate what GD has done to our community with confidence.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my recent transfer, I spent a bigger amount to purchase daily cattle for both domestic and revenue generation. This has been my dream for a very long time but I did not have the capability of accomplishing it until when GD came to the picture.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the construction of a new house in our household to its completion. We used to struggle a lot whenever visitors came around since we would always opt to hold our meetings under some shades but currently we are all good since the space inside the house is enough.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving the money from GiveDirectly marked the best moment in my life. It really was the start of a new chapter in my life. It was worth celebrating that moment and on receiving the confirmation message that the money was in, I had to wake every member of the household to at least witness with me. Ideas filled our mind and a funny one which came first was the fear that the money might be stolen if at all we will leave all of them in the account. We made an agreement to withdraw at least 40000 KES and leave the remaining for future use.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
After receiving the first transfers, I decided to spend 45000 KES in the construction of a new house. I had to cut a lot of timber and also bought 32 iron sheets which I used in roofing. Receiving the money was a relief to us since initially we were living in a small hut which was not spacious enough to accommodate all the household members. In cases where we had some visitors, we would always set a sitting under a shade since the house was too small. Currently, we are feeling good that we can welcome visitors every other time. We spent the remaining amount on buying household clothing both for my wife and also children since everyone in the household had old clothing. We are so grateful to GiveDirectly for the help they gave us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I live in a small house(one room) which I feel is squeezed given that my family is growing.I therefore have a plan of using my first transfer of 550 USD to build another house and buy furniture.I will build a one bed roomed house. With the second transfer I will buy two dairy cows. What I get as a motorcycle taxi rider is not enough to satisfy all the family's needs. This is what prompted me to think of dairy farming. While I am away at work my wife will be looking after the cows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I operate a motorcycle taxi.I therefore leave my home at 7 am in the morning and come back at 7pm. I enjoy my evenings when I am done with my work. When I am away form the cold and dust which I encounter as I ride my motorcycle.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Providing for my family has been an uphill task for me. It's 10 years now since I became a family man.I was 23 at that time and I struggled a lot since I was still young with no stable source of income .I depended on casual labour to make ends meet. With casual labour I used to earn 0.2 USD a day. This was barely enough to meet the basic needs. We started a group where we did merry go rounds and after pooling resources ,my turn came .The money I received helped me buy a motorcycle years later. The motorcycle taxi has now turned out to be my main source of income. It has been a long journey.
