How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to start livestock rearing, especially dairy cows. This will be my reliable source of living. I will be able to sell milk around the village, something that will earn me daily income to continue funding my children's education. In addition, I will have a steady supply of milk for my family consumption.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think GiveDirectly did well in sending cash transfers to poor households in my village. Every eligible household according to the criteria was enrolled into the program. There were no complaints from the villagers since everyone was trained about the project at the community meeting that was conducted by the Officers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have desired to own proper beddings since I was sleeping on a small traditional bed with sacks as beddings. This was uncomfortable as well as embarrassing whenever I received an important visitor. I spent KES 10,500 of my recent transfer to purchase a modern bed and mattress, currently, I am happy sleeping on nice beddings something that has installed dignity. In addition, I used KES 25,000 to support the education of my 3 children, I paid all the term two school fees. They are now learning without any interruption. I spent part of the remaining amount to purchase two goats for KES 5000. I was remaining with some cash that I used to buy food and water for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Ululations from my immediate neighbor made make curious and walked out of the kitchen when I was preparing some lunch. Upon inquiring she signaled me pointing at her phone in happiness. I quickly went in for my phone and found a message just waiting for me on the screen to read. Upon checking I had received the transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. I jumped up and down in happiness for I knew the long waited solutions to my problems were finally here.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is having a good house with an iron sheet roof. I was just seeing such houses in other households but I now own one. Initially I was staying in a grass-thatched house which was small and also leaking during rainy season. Currently I wish the rain to be raining almost every night since the iron sheets produce a nice sound at night when it rains thus give me a good deep sleep.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My desire was to have a good permanent house, not a must to be a block hose but a good one. After withdrawing the money I set aside KES 30000.00 for building a house. I did this because the one I had was too small. I also took KES 8000.00 and bought a cow. I wanted to buy more but due the lack of pasture I bought only one. I also took KES 9000.00 and paid school fees for my 3 children who were mostly on and off school due to fee problems. The remaining amount I bought some food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a reliable source of income for my household. I have desired to invest in livestock because this is the only way I can save my money to earn me a profit when I sell them after they have multiplied. Therefore, I intend to use $240 of my first transfer to buy 8 goats. The remaining amount of my first transfer will help me to build a 2 bedroom house for my family. Currently, I am staying in a small house which is not decent and is not enough for me and my children. I will further use $400 of my second transfer to buy 2 indigenous dairy cows for milk production for my consumption household consumption and sale to earn me an extra income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. Waking up in the morning healthy together with the rest of my family makes me happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of sustainable income is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced. I am an unskilled person and getting a job to sustain my family of 7 has been a great challenge to me. The only source of livelihood is charcoal vending a job that earns me $ 2 a day which I spend on food for my family.
