How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the near future, I am looking forward to buying a plot for constructing rental houses. I developed this goal after scrutinizing several ideas that were crossing my mind. The rental business is almost a lifetime investment unless at a scenario where you don’t get tenants which is very difficult to miss out.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, this organization called GiveDirectly did a marvelous job. Apart from the many good houses that people built through the transfers from GiveDirectly, I can say it enabled me to get a water tank which aided my family to store water at a time when we were stuck due to water shortages which we experienced in our area. It also enabled me to save some money for my child who is yet to join college, something that would have stressed me because of lack of income. Basing on that, I can say this organization has no faults and it cane to hold our hands. Thank you GiveDirectly for the unconditional support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfer came at a time when we were facing water shortages due to the drought that had strike our area. After withdrawing the money, the first thing to accomplish was buying a water tank for KES 12000.00 which would help my family in storing water. I also bought some building sand and some blocks to construct a pillar stand for the tank. Thereafter, I bought 6 goats for KES 22000.00 and saved KES 10000.00 for my child who will be reporting to college in September 2022. I also bought a door for my house and used the rest in buying some food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 7 AM when I was preparing breakfast for my children when my phone started vibrating so loudly. Since I couldn't read on my own, I decided to wake up my son so that he can check who had sent the message at that particular time. After checking he realized that it was a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy to learn the news and I still remember the day as if it was yesterday. This will forever be a memorable day in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that I was able to expand my business ( selling vegetables and traditional herbs) is evident enough that my life has changed. This is because Previously, I used to solely depend on it and could not sustain all my family's y needs. On a good day, I could earn KES 200 which was too little w. Being the family breadwinner forced me to take loans from different banks so that I can pay school fees for my children which were stressful. Sometimes this was not achievable and they used to miss important exams which have been demotivating them. I am now so grateful and happy because the business is doing so well and getting good returns ( KES 700) a day. Now I can comfortably meet my family's needs with less strain. I am thankful to GiveDirectly for coming into my life the time I needed their help the most.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part o my first transfer on clearing school fees for my daughter who was in her final year in secondary school( KES 20000). I also bought a metal door KES 5000 I felt fixing a metallic one was important for security purposes in my compound. Also, I boosted my business of selling some traditional herbs and vegetables. This has been the main source of income that I have been relying on for all these years. I later bought a water tanks KES 10000 which is now of great help especially in harvesting and storing water for my domestic use and also sell some if need be. With the amount of money that has remained, I bought decent clothes and sufficient foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This is the second year since the drought hit our area, getting food has constantly been a challenge. Receiving this money means I can start a small grocery shop to sell for my people. I will then use the remaining amount to take my last born to college. With the profit from the grocery shop, I will buy goats which can then multiply and help me educate my kid.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One week ago my second male child was blessed with a baby girl. She was named after me, this brought joy to know my lineage will grow to the next generation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With the prolonged drought, getting fresh water to drink is a challenge. I have to walk for 10 kilometers to get 20 liters jar of water which cannot be used for more than one day. I have to spend KES 500 to buy 5 jars to sustain me for one week.
