How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has really changed as compared to how I lived before. I could be a laughing stock in our community who was known of walking in tattered clothes. Sometimes, children could ran away from me as they mistook me for a mad man. This made me feel disgraced in my own community. Today I am smart in new attires and surely people are willing to associate themselves with me. My health would have deteriorated since I could not raise the medical bills following the operation of growth in my stomach. I am afraid that I would be detained in hospital if I never received the transfer from GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has painted a picture of greatness in the minds of people. True liberation visited our community as transfers hit the accounts of the recipients. No child stays at home due to lack of school fees, people eat well and of good diet and others have engaged in small scale businesses including farming. I have no observation on what GiveDirectly never did well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I have withdrawn the second transfer and spent it on preparing my farms ready for planting. With better preparation of farms, I expect better harvest that would boost food security for my household. I intend to sell the surplus harvest and use the money in paying school fees for my children. I spent some part on medication since I was diagnosed with growth in my stomach that prompted an operation. Now I feel healthier and stronger even though still continuing with treatments.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
We were only two boys in our family, unfortunately, the other brother passed on before paying the dowry. Being the only remaining brother, the parents to the spouse could ask me every time on when I'll pay for their daughter's dowry. This couldn't give me peace and most of the day I had sleepless nights because of the debt. Currently, I'm so happy and peaceful knowing that the dowry is already cleared. This is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment when I received the money I felt so happy and the first thing I thought of was to buy a television so that I could save myself from the embarrassment of seeing my children walking in and out of other people's houses to watch television.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
One of my brothers passed on before paying his wife's dowry, so I used part of the money to pay for the dowry. According to our tradition, a woman's dowry has to be paid so that she can open ways for her children in future to pay a dowry to their spouses, it's also a way of appreciating the woman and the parents for the work they did by taking good care of the woman. I, therefore, had to clear the debt and now I'm happy and proud the dowry is cleared because she is part of us. My children too could spend most of their time in neighbors houses watching television which was embarrassing to me because every time the neighbors could report that the children broke some of their household items. This used to disturb me a lot but since I couldn't afford a television set, I didn't have a choice but to stay with the embarrassment. So the moment I received the money, I used part of it to purchase a television set. I'm now happy and proud because my children never go to watch at my neighbor's houses anymore.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a lot to me. I will invest it in buying household items like chairs and a TV so that my family and I can live comfortably.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am sleeping in my bed.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face is lack of a stable source of funds. I depend so much on farming. But this has its challenges as the rains are always seasonal. This therefore means that when the rains are not present, I can not do farming and hence my source of funds is affected .
