How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I would wish to restart my business of selling dry fish. I was doing this activity sometimes back but was forced to leave it due to my health problems. I planning to start it by saving $50 from the charcoal vending. This will be a reliable source of income for the family, which would assist me in educating my children and providing food for the family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my view, Givedirectly did a good job in sending in cash aid direct to our phones. The numerous meeting they conducted in our community helped us to understand the program better. Also allows us to ask questions and get answers concerning the aid. Lastly, the enrollment process was free and fair. I think there is nothing that they do wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have 6 children who are still schooling both in primary and secondary school. The recent transfer was a great boost to their education. I spent $155 to pay off school fees for them. At the moment, I am delighted that they are attending classes without their studies interrupted. Previously, they could stay at home for more than one month due to lack of school fees something disturbed my mind. In addition, I bought 3 goats to restart livestock rearing an activity that I was relying on one year ago. I had to sell all the animals to support the studies of my children. Furthermore, I bought a new modern bed and mattress for $125. Earlier, I was sleeping on a traditional bed with broken legs and rags that were comfortless. Lastly, I bought enough food with the remaining amount of food

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way home from the nearby food store when I had gone to purchase foodstuffs for dinner. I remember it was around 5pm when I received the message notification on the phone. After checking, I felt extremely happy for receiving the transfer since I was very sure that my kids would resume their studies. I had to wait for the helper to come back to assist in withdrawing the transfer since I had no experience on mobile money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing my children resuming back to school and are learning without any problem is the biggest difference in my daily life. In addition, we are able to meet most our daily needs especially food without struggling. Previously, they had dropped out due to the huge fee balances something that bothered my mind.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My six children had dropped out of school for more than 3 month due to the huge fee balances. The transfer was of great help for me , I spent KES 26,750 to clear their fee arrears. I have one kid in college , one in form 3 and the remaining were still in lower primary. I was very worried about their education and their future life. Additionally, I used KES 3,500 to purchase school uniforms for my 6 children since they were wearing worn out uniforms which was very embarrassing to me. with the remaining amount, I spent KES 8000 to purchase sufficiet food for the family and KES 2500 to pay food debt at the shop where I took foodstuffs on credit. Lastly, I saved KES 6000 for any financial emmergecy.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am in my middle ages and i have engaging myself in charcoal burning as my main source of economic activity, unfortunately i have been ailing from unending dry coughs. And after several visits to the doctor, i was advised to stop that business.
I'm dissapointed because the other source of livelihood is farming and there is a lot of drought and cannot depend on it.
I plan to use my first transfer to build a house for my son who is about to get married, already he had started but for lack of funds, the project has stopped, the rest of the transfer will be used to buy food for my family
What is the happiest part of your day?
When it rained few months ago, it made me so happy i thought if it could go on for few weeks, our farms would be productive.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challange is food insecurity, sometimes we go for days without food and clean water.
I depend on my charcoal business and at the moment, its not doing well and i have nothing to support me in my daily basic needs with my children.
