How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As a new goal, I hope to open up a dry maize grain selling business that I will be buying in bulk from the lorries and breaking them into small quantities as I sell to the community members. Many people in our community buy maize, which has been very expensive in the past few months. There has been a short supply because few people are in the business, thus the prices keep shooting every day. In the past three months, I had been saving through an informal group with other village members, where we contribute of KES 350 every week to an individual. I am hopeful that when my turn comes in a three weeks to come, I will receive KES 10000 that can kick-start my business. This project will not only earn me a profit but will ensure constant availability of foodstuff in my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an admirable job in our village after giving us a free cash transfer. That was a chance to decide on spending. Everyone had an idea of how to handle the challenges they had been facing when they received the transfer. This resulted in a diversified use across the villages that benefited from the program. I am grateful that everything went as expected since they briefed us before enrollment on what to expect.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I spent KES 30000 on obtaining new pieces of furniture. I had a new house that I had completed the construction just a few months before receiving the first transfer. I could not complete its furnishing with the first transfer, but on receiving the second patch, I bought four seats each KES 5000 and also four tables at KES 2500 each. My house looks great at the moment, and I can confidently welcome any visitor, unlike in the past when the house had no seats. I also spent KES 13400 of the remaining amount on buying two sacks of maize that we have been using as a foodstuff with my family. In addition, I spent the remaining amount on buying new pairs of clothes

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7 am and I was at home having breakfast with my husband when suddenly my phone rang notifying me of a new message. I checked it since I had it with me. I was so surprised when I opened the SMS and I read that we had received KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us. I was so happy on seeing it and I immediately showed the SMS to my husband. He was so happy too on seeing and we thanked God and GiveDirectly for it. We then finished our breakfast and I hurriedly prepared myself to go withdraw the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. We now have new clothes to wear, and food to eat and we managed to pay off the debt that we were owing someone. We are thus happy and we have had some peace of mind since we no longer owe anyone anything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 20000 of our recent transfer on paying off debt. We had borrowed the money from someone so that we could use it in meeting some of our needs. My husband who had casually been employed as a driver was no longer going to work and hence we were not able to meet some of our needs since we didn't have the money. We then took KES 9600 which we spent on buying two bags of maize for our consumption. We usually do not plant maize on our farm and hence we usually incur the cost of buying some. We have instead planted animal feeds which we usually use in feeding our cows. The milk that we get from them, we usually sell some and use the money to buy food, that is, maize, buy school uniforms for our three children and pay school fees for them. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying clothes for ourselves and the children and I bought some household utensils with it. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for their support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the past 9 years we have been building our living room .It has taken us this long because the income we get from driving a lorry is insufficient to meet the household requirements as well as put up a complete structure. We have three children who also depend on this income for their school fees. Completing the construction of this three-roomed house at once has been a bigger challenge and hence we gave occupied one of the semi finalized room .Receiving this amount means my house will be completely built and furnished.I plan to spend KES 40000 on the completion of this house and I am happy to move into it in the next 3 months.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The love and support from our relatives has brought happiness in my life in the past 6 months. My relatives have been of utmost support in terms of food and planting materials to my household in the past difficult months .This gives me joy because at last I have somewhere to run to when in need.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Unemployment is the biggest challenge we are currently facing. My husband and I do not have any paying jobs at the moment, we depend on on-farm activities for our living. It is difficult at the moment to earn revenues from the farm produce because the yields we get are too minimal and even inadequate for our consumption. Because of this joblessness, my household has experienced a food shortage in the past three months and hence borrowing from relatives in the other county. This makes me unhappy because it lowers my self-esteem. Moreover, my husband is an academically qualified person yet he does not have access to jobs.
