How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Once you have lived in a community for over five years, it is easy to identify the underlying problems that the people in that area experience. In my community, for instance, people travel up to five kilometres in search of basic commodities for their families. It is for this reason that I hope to upgrade my retail business to a wholesale one and thus better serve the people of this area. Currently, I run a retail business, but I am not accommodating to the community because I lack some commodities that the community could otherwise wish to have, so they would have to travel far to get them since this is the only shop around here. If I expand this business, then the people will save on transportation costs, for I will attract more customers, and the $60 profit that I earn monthly will double. I will be excited to have saved for the community, build customer relationships, and improve my family's financial status.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Nature dictates that human beings do not get satisfied. Even though this is the case, I am still appreciative of GiveDirectly for the unconditionality of the transfers. Through this, each pressing family need can be catered for because we are not equal by nature. I am glad that my family of six benefited from the transfers because we are not where we were previously. In addition, the company's advisory messages have assisted families in making decisions, and now their lives have improved. I never want GiveDirectly to change a thing about how they work because, as it stands, it is the best working.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In the 21st century, having the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing is essential. I am glad to have achieved this for my family of six through the transfers. From the last transfers, I utilized $300 in completing the three-room brick-walled house that I commenced constructing in September 2022. We used to live in a two-room, mud-walled house that often leaked during heavy rains, thus predisposing my family to diseases such as pneumonia. In addition, I used $200 to add more stock to the retail business that my family depends on. From the business, I earn approximately $60 in profit a month that fully supports my family, including food, clothing, and education for my children. I am now hopeful, with the expanded business, that the profits will increase and my financial status will be upgraded.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The instant I received my transfer as I recall, I was at home relaxing and waiting on my customers to show up. I heard my phone ring and on checking, I realized I had received money from Segovia technologies. The immense joy I felt was unimaginable. Immediately, I called my husband and told him the good news, and we embarked on planning how we would have to spend the cash transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My business was on the verge of collapsing yet we solely relied on it. The stock was so little. Luckily, GiveDirectly came at the right time to save us. I can ultimately say that the big difference now is the fact that I finalized building my house and raised my business. My husband and I are grateful for the support that's brought us joy and happiness in life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband and I had prior planned on how best to spend our transfer. Upon receipt of the transfer, of $300 we used it to stockpile our retail shop. This would boost our income. I also spent some of the money to renovate our incomplete house. I had left it incomplete to prioritize the little earnings on other household needs since I'm the sole breadwinner after the retirement of my husband. We are fortunate that we have three children. I feel my living standards have been greatly uplifted because of the unconditional cash transfer and thus, I'm grateful.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I think of this money and I see accomplishment. My husband and I are building a house where we can start our new family. It has been a year since I got married and I am happy he decided to build me a home. We got stuck along the way due to financial constraints but finally hope is here. About $ 700 will go to the completion of the house and the other amount will be used to boost our business. We run a shop, selling household good. It is our main source of income. I will be content once we achieve all these.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The coming of rains has brought hope into our lives. The last ten months have been a struggle with scarcity of food and at times water. But now, when I see my crops growing I am hopeful that the next few months will be bountiful if the rains are consistent.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
A home is what my heart longs for. My husband Festus is building us a house which has forced us to live in a tiny house whose roofing is worn out. The construction has taken a while to complete since he retired from his civil duties as a Chief. The little we earn from our small shop caters to food only. How I wish he would get finances so as to finalize this project.
