How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have three acres of land and with the drought, I cannot cultivate because of a lack of enough water for the crops. I am hoping that the drought season will end soon, Prepare my piece of land and cultivate kale, spinach, and maize, and Open a grocery business that will help me generate more income to help my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am thankful my first goal has come true. Give directly has supported a lot of dreams in the village, mine included. It has also helped people to start over. A lot of family are sending their children to school now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I saved my two transfers of $1100 to install water at my home. The whole project was mainly to start a business and sell water to the villagers. The water business revenue has been helping me to buy my monthly medication. I have diabetes and kidney problems and each month I have to go for a check-up which costs me $100. Before the transfer I could not keep up with the medical expenses because of lack of money, so most of the time I was weak and could not work. I stayed home depending on my husband and children. My husband is a farmer and most of the time he is the primary earner in the family. The Revenue from my business has helped me buy medicine and food for my family without strain.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the grazing field looking after my livestock. I vividly remember it was around 2 pm when I received the message notifications of my transfer. Being illiterate, I continue looking after my cows until 4 pm when I returned home for my helper to verify my account. I was very happy when I was informed that I had received my transfer that would alleviate the poverty conditions for a better life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am living a happy life after connecting tap water to my house. In addition, it will serve as my reliable source of income when I started water vending which will earn me a living that will cater for the essential needs of the family. I am very grateful that I was able to accomplish this dream with the help of GiveDirectly transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my first transfer to connect tap water to my house. I used KES 30,000 to purchase the PVC pipes, apply for the water meter, and pay labor costs. This is because I was buying water at a long distance which is more than 1 km from my house. In addition, I am intending to start vending water to our neighbors to earn an extra income. I also used KES 10,000 to pay off part of the college fee for my son who is taking an electrical engineering course. His education was about to be cut short due to the huge fee arrears. Furthermore, I spent some amount seeking medical care for myself since I am diagnosed with high blood pressure. I used the remaining amount to purchase enough food for the family of 5. I am planning to spend my next transfer on purchasing a 10,000 litres capacity water tank which I will use to store enough water for my family's consumption as well as for sale.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my family. I am planning to spend KES 60,000 to cater for education of my three children who are in secondary school. The remaining amount will help me to restock my shop which was my main source of income. I am able to earn a profit of KES 500 which will enable me to have an income generating activity. I will use the savings to cater for the basic needs of my household such as food, education and clothing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In August last year I celebrated the weeding of my granddaughter. Despite the fact that, this was a second weeding in my homestead, the fact that God enabled me to witness her getting married brought me joy and happiness. It is a day I will always remember and pray for her to live long so.as to attend one for her grandchild too.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is lack of finances. My husband and I have no regular income. We depend on casual agricultural labor which is difficult to find. The job is labor intensive and the earnings KES 600 per week is not sustainable fot a household of five members. All the money I get goes into buying food. Due to this, It has been challenging to save sufficient money insider to restart my shop.
