How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to assemble all the resources that I have in readiness to pay school fees for my children who will be joining secondary school as from next year. It is a tough assignment that needs serious commitment and it is for this reason that we have joined merry go round in an effort to put up a savings plan that will help us then. Our first born child is joining form one next year while the second born is joining one year after our first. This we know is a hard task ahead for us but we are putting all our efforts together to make sure they study uninterrupted.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us training before we received the money. The training was a great eye opener in terms of what we can do with the money but more importantly is the training on transfer safety. The officers were so keen to make sure that we do not lose any money once we received in our accounts as if this were their own money. On the other hand, I did not find anything that I thought GiveDirectly could or should improve. They did everything perfectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 23000 to buy a dairy cow and used the remaining amount to complete the construction of our new house. I chose to buy a dairy cow as an investment that will not only act as a savings plan for the future but will also feed my family. It shall always be a constant reminder of the support that I received from GiveDirectly too. Our first born child is joining secondary school soon and we are committed to doing everything possible within our means to pay their school fees and make them comfortable in school. We received the transfers from GiveDirectly when we were underway with the construction of our new brick walled house. The house was at the roofing stage and the second transfer was helpful in that we used it to do the roofing and to fix windows and doors. The construction of the said house is not yet complete but we are thankful that we have made tremendous steps towards it's completion.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm and I was busy at my business place serving the customers. As I was going about with my work, I heard my phone ringing hence notifying me of a new message. I stopped a bit to check it and to my surprise, I found out that it was an SMS saying that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was not expecting it and hence I was so excited. I called my husband who was so happy too upon hearing the good news. I then went and withdrew the money immediately after closing my business.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. We managed to continue with the construction of the house that we had left pending for a year. We did not know where we were going to get the money for doing so and hence we are very much thankful for their big support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my recent transfer money on building a house that we had started building before, but we had left it pending for about a year due to a lack of money. We built a big permanent house and hence it has costed us a lot of building materials. We bought 32 iron sheets at KES 930 per iron sheet. We also bought trees that we cut them for timber for constructing the house. We decided to construct another house because the ones that we are currently living in are made of mud. Getting mud for mudding the houses has become a big challenge since it is no longer easily available. We hence usually buy it. I have a small business selling vegetables and milk while my husband is doing the motorcycle taxi business. The money that we get from our hustles most of it usually goes to the purchase of food, some household needs, and paying for the merry-go-round contributions in the self-help groups that we have joined. We also paid KES 8000 as a deposit for the doors so that the carpenter could make them, and another KES 3200 we spent on buying a bag of maize for our consumption. We are hence grateful to GiveDirectly for everything.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always had a dream of building a brick permanent house. I started building my house eight months ago but it has stalled due to a lack of funds. The house we currently live in is small for my family of four. My younger children are forced to sleep on the floor while the other two sleeps at their grandmother's house. This makes me sad at times as a parent, as I do not get to raise my other children and I do not know about their welfare at the grandmother's place. Receiving this money, therefore, means I will realize my dream of owning a permanent house. I plan to spend KES 80,000 and the rest I buy a cow as an investment.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Six months ago we moved here where we currently live because the previous location was so squeezed that we could not do any developments. We moved here so that we could at least do some farming and other developments like income-generating activities like poultry. This is one happy move that we still celebrate.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is insufficient finances. My husband is a motorbike rider, the much he makes (KES 300 a day) goes to purchasing food for the family. This work is unreliable due to competition. I own a small grocery stall, the proceeds go to food too and other needs like clothing and paying school fees. This is what has made us stuck and taken us a long time to complete constructing the house.
