How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a passion when it comes to rearing livestock and If I can get enough capital, I would like to continue rearing chickens, goats, cows, and ducks for commercial purposes.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has made the people in the village happy. Sending us these transfers through our account, not middlemen is a good plan because we get all the money that was intended for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am forty-three years old and I have never married in my life. All my life I have been farming, and rearing livestock such as chickens, goats, and ducks which I sell at the market weekly. But during this drought season, I lost all my livestock due to dehydration. I was devastated and got into depression. With no water for farming, I opted to find casual jobs that would sustain me as I wait for the rain. I have been getting jobs that pay me $4 a day which enables me to buy food. We are two in the family, my sister and I. She is a widow and she has been taking care of the children alone. Receiving these funds has enabled me to help pay school fees for her children and repair my house that was leaking from the roof.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home around 8 am, sweeping my house. My sister had visited me and sat in my compound. We were just having a normal conversation when my phone’s message tone interrupted our conversation.I checked my message and shouted with excitement and told her that Give directly finally sent us the cash they promised. She didn’t believe me at first, and she walked hastily toward me to read and confirm. It puzzled her face after seeing the amount of cash received. We both celebrated that day by buying wheat flour and making our favorite meal, which is “Chapati” with a meat stew.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Our family is a circle of strength and the biggest impact was taking my sister's children to school. While interacting with my nieces, the bond is strong and has earned my respect as the man they look up to. I have also bought more goats, which is to my advantage, especially now that the market price of goats has gone up.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am single, with no children of my own, and have grown close to my sister. Her children have become my own and we share our struggles and financial challenges. Because I am unemployed and depend mostly on farming and livestock rearing, it's been a tough season because of the climate change that affected our lands have not been financially stable to support her with her two daughters, Upon withdrawal of the cash, I spent KES 30,000 as of school fees for them and bought them new school bags for KES 3000. I bought two more goats for KES 7000 because my intention is to increase my livestock. We both didn’t have enough food and the remaining cash was spent on food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been admiring to start a goat farming business for long but because of financial constraits, I have never been able to fulfill my life ambitions. Having this support from Givedirectly with this financial aid, I will use all the transfers, 110000 KES to start my project since I have a piece of land to practice this. I am living by a river side of which my goats will have plenty of water to drink and plenty of pastures. I will get milk for my domestic use and also, I will be selling some goats to earn a good profit.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In 1st January this year, I slaughtered a goat that I ate with my family. The campany I had with my children who have been staying in Mombasa was a great source of happiness. Hence, I consider this as what has brought joy to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of fresh water in our area has been the main challenge that I am currently facing. To get 20 litters of water will mean walking 5 kilometers which is a very exhaustive. Sometimes, I am forced to drink salt water that can not quench thirst.
