How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different because I did not have a pair of oxen. I only bought it when I received the support from GiveDirectly. I am expecting my farming to improve because I am assured of doing my farming timely. Also, ploughing the whole of my acreage will no longer be a challenge. My children are also progressing well with their studies having paid their school fees through this transfer. I had also planned to start a small business of food kiosk that will help me generate income. As a starting capital, I saved KES 30000 for this purpose. Once this is successful, then I will be having a source of income to depend on .
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Ever since the coming of GiveDirectly, our lives are never the same. Enrolling and giving us the unconditional transfers has brought a positive impact in our lives and also reducing the poverty that had stricken us for years. I don't see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of the second transfer on paying for my children's school fees for them to continue with their studies. Apart from this, I bought an ox-plough worth KES 7500 for ploughing. I also bought some foodstuffs and some other household items that I lacked in my house. I am planning also to start a business like a fast food kiosk in our area. I saved KES 30000 to facilitate this. I am still looking for a good place to open this business. This will serve as a source of income to me, and will be helpful in fulfilling my family's basic needs.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was always doing my farming late and the harvests that I was getting was just a handful. Thus, getting a more efficient technique for timely planting and cultivation was a need that I had desired to have for a long time. Through the transfer, I was able to buy a pair of oxen which will help me achieve this. To me, getting the pair of oxen is a big boost to my farming to get robust harvests. and this is the biggest difference that I have so far experienced in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification around 6 o'clock and on checking it was from GiveDirectly notifying me that I had received my first transfer from them. I was exceedingly happier than before for I never imagined that a day would come that I would receive such a large sum of money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of the transfer I received to buy a pair of oxen and an ox-plough. For a long time, I have been hiring from neighbours since the tools that I was using were tiresome and inefficient for a large acreage, and due to this, my harvest was just a handful. Hiring was a bit expensive to me and owning my own pair of oxen would be advantageous to me as I will be able to maximumly utilize my land timely to get plenty of harvests enough to feed my family. I will also be hiring to my neighbours when the time of planting comes and for which I will be generating some income. In addition to this, I bought some food and other basic necessities for the family. I am planning to rent a place with the remaining amount so as to open a shop and adequate stock it. This will be a forever lasting solution for employment from which I will be generating income for my daily upkeep and for investment in other projects.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always dreamt of having my own oxen and an ox plough. This is because they make ploughing easier on my two acre farm. Ploughing with a hoe is tiresome and takes more time. However with the oxen I can plough the whole farm in less time and am also able to get more yield. I will also save myself the extra cost of having to hire other people's oxen to plough my farm.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day starts at four in the morning and I go to the farm till noon. I take lunch and go back to the farm till four in the evening. This is when I get to rest and spend time with my family which makes me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Poor rainfalls have affected productivity in my farm. This has led to insufficient food in my household. I now have to go an extra mile to work odd jobs to feed my family. This takes a huge toll on me due to my old age because my body is always tired and weak.
