How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goal that developed apart from the ones that I have shared with the officers. The one I achieved was buying livestock. I am optimistic that the goats will increase in number within a short period. I will therefore be able to sell some in the local market since they are always in high demand. The income that I will receive will enable me to cater to all the basic needs in my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well in my entire village by making sure that our lives have transformed. Initially, we used to sleep in grass-thatched houses, but currently, all our houses are iron-roofed. Also, we have been empowered to take all our children to school. Lastly, all compounds now have livestock which are valuable assets that one can rely on at any time. I, therefore, do not see any sector in which they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole amount of my second transfer on purchasing more stock in my retail shop business. It was almost collapsing and I was afraid I might end up closing it. The shop was our major source of income since my spouse has been jobless. This affected my entire household because we could even go without meals. I was however hopeful that very soon I will revive it. For now, the business is stable and generating a good amount of profits of KES 2000 a day. I have been able to pay school fees for my child and comfortably cater to the other basic needs in my household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left home early that morning at around 6:30 am and headed to my shop where I sell stuff like sugar, rice cooking oil and even biscuits, a business that has been helping me sustain my family for a while. The message came in at around 7:00 am and the joy and happiness I felt at that moment is almost unexplainable because I did not think GiveDirectly would keep its word and never had I ever in my lifetime received such an amount of cash at once. I immediately informed my husband and he was over the moon upon hearing the news, so saying we were joyful is almost an understatement.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
One of the most sizeable difference is that with the money, I got the opportunity to grow my business and my store, which was clearly evident with the increase in the number of customers because I had more stock therefore I had more things to offer my consumers thus broadening my trade and for that I am most grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As I mentioned earlier I happen to own a shop which has aided in assisting my family cope with the day to life so as we can afford the cost of living and so I took some portion of the money and invested in the stock at the shop. I purchased flour, a sack of beans, cooking oil, wheat flour, sugar and including other amenities I needed at my store which roughly cost me almost thirty thousand kenyan shillings. Apart from that, I also acquired livestock which included two goats and two cows where as I fetched them for ten thousand and eighteen thousand kenyan shillings respectively and we use them for both domestic and commercial use.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improving my standards of living. Currently am a house wife and sometimes I assist my husband in his shop. When I receive this money, I will start my own grocery business so as to reduce the dependence rate to my husband. I will start with a Capital of Ksh.30000. I expect a profit of Ksh.1000 everyday. I will use Ksh. 60000 to buy four cows as investment and also use the remaining amount to buy six goats.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest Part is in the evening. This is because my husband will be back home from his business. He gives me feedback of how the day was and I feel his company. Unlike in the afternoon and morning when am alone in the house.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
When I was in form one, my father suffered stroke. My family and I lived a very miserable life. Our living standard was very low. There was no food and school fees. Well wishers helped me finish school. That's the biggest hardship I faced.
