How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After seeing how other people invested in livestock raring, I also accepted the challenge and I am looking forward to buying livestock too once I get some money. I came to realize that livestock specifically goats can be converted to money at any time when the need arises. I placed this as my priority to fulfill if I get money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a remarkable thing. It enabled me to get things that I was just wishing to have but I had no means of making my wishes a success. If it were not for the organization I would not have managed to build the house I have now; up to date I would be still sleeping in the kitchen.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the second transfer, the priority that I had already set was to construct a house. Initially, I had no house at all and I was sleeping in a kitchen. I bought all the required materials for construction. I cannot recall how much I used due to my old age but what I can say is that I had no house but now I have a two-roomed house. I also bought a cow. After doing so I opted to keep the remaining amount for the family upkeep.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at 9 AM when I was sitting under a palm tree taking breakfast later on my children, joined me. After like five minutes, my cellphone started vibrating but because I am old and illiterate, one of my grandsons decided to check what the notification was all about. I was overwhelmed with joy asfter telling me that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly they had debited my first transfers into my account. I remember having to leave the tea and started celebrating for I knew this organization has finally rescued me from the troubles in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in m daily life is that I sleep under a permanent iron-roofed house that is well plastered. Previously I used to stay in a very pathetic environment, the house was very small and in critical condition, it would even collapse anytime. Being an old widow I was not able to work on my own and I used to depend on my son for the daily bread which was sometimes could go without. Therefore building a better house was not achievable at all though it has been a saddening experience all along. Being rained on in the winter seasons and the cold night was the worst of all. I had even lost hope in life because I had nowhere to lean on. Luckily, GiveDirectly came into my life and this is the period that I needed them the most. I managed to construct a decent house and for now, I no longer worry about the rains and even insecurities issues. I am living peacefully with my grandchildren and may our Lord continue GiveDirectly for restoring the joy in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials like bricks, twenty-five bags of cement, sand and iron sheets and labour at a total cost of KES 46000. This was for the construction of a new permanent hose since the previous one was a traditional small hut with a leaky roof also, it could not accommodate some of my family members. I later cleared the hospital bill of KES 1000 since I jave been ailing for quite some time and I had no one to take care of me since my spouse passed on so many years ago and my only son also has his own family besides, he lives in a miserable life as well. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for the family

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means a better house. I'm planning to use the transfer to construct a spacious house for my visitors and I. I have had frequent visits from my relatives but the biggest problem has been lack of a better place to accommodate them. Most of the relatives who've been paying me some visits are forced to come and leave the same day, something am not happy about. I will use the balance to buy two indigenous dairy cows for milk production. The milk will serve two purposes; for domestic consumption and for sale.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. Waking up alive and healthy makes me a happy woman. I don't take any new day for granted. I always thank God whenever I wake up in the morning.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is sickness. I was bitten by a snake 6 years ago but since then I've had many complications in relation to my health. I have visited several hospitals with no hope of getting better.
