How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I managed to construct a new house since the initial one had collapsed on one side because of its poor state. However, I thought of renovating it but then I changed my mind and decided to construct another one. During that period when the other room had collapsed some of my children had to live with their grandmother's house because the house could no longer accommodate us. I was even worried about the winter seasons because some of my properties would get damaged. Also, the fact that I cleared fees for my son who was to sit his final exam makes the biggest difference in my life as well. I was not sure if he would still do the exams because the teachers were so harsh because of my fake promises for not paying the fees on time, which wasn't my fault.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by ensuring all the beneficiaries were issue mobile phones. Some of us never had hopes of owning them anytime soon simply because they were ex[ensove. Also, GveDirctly has made communication to be easier amongst ourselves in the village with the help of the phones part from sending and receiving money. I do not see any part GD failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building materials such as pieces timber and nails. I purchased all these intending to complete my house which I was in the process of using the first transfers. Also the mason KES 8000 for his labor. Also, I used KES 20000 of the transfers for my son who is high school boarding. With the remaining amount of money, I bought three KES 6000 as the potential living assets that I can lean on. With the remaining money I bought sufficient food for the family that would at least last us for weeks

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 12 noon when I wat at my daily hustle then I heard my phone ringing. Without wasting time, I decided to check since it was quite unusual for my phone to ring at that particular hour. Upon checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GD I had finally received the first transfers. I was overwhelmed with joy and no word could explain how I felt.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning the house that I am currently sheltering on is the biggest difference in my daily life. Before GD came into my life, I have been sleeping under a tree and during the rainy seasons, I had to seek shelter from friends. This is because my house collapses some time back and I had no money to purchase the required materials for the construction. Life has been so miserable and tough and I had no shoulder to lean on since almost everyone in the village was undergoing the same problem. Therefore sleeping under this house has given me so much peace and joy in my daily life. Currently, we are so happy as a family. We could not achieve all these if I couldn't have  gotten financial support from Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, building poles, threads, nails. This was for the purpose of constructing a spacious decent house since the previous one was a small hut which had collqa[sed some few weeks ago. Later on, I bought some si goats as my potential asset to depend on just I case of any emergency. With the remaing amount of money, I am using it in buying enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It has always been my wish to build a decent house for my family of 3 members. Currently, the house I own is leaking and risky because it about to callapse on one side. Receiving this money means a better shelter for my family since I am planning to spend $ 250 to construct a one-room house. I will invest $ 300 of the remaining amount in goats rearing which will be my realible source of income to assist me in any financial emergency.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is the happiest part of the days. Being a casual labor, I am always busy in the morning and afternoon doing my work. This job drain a lot of energy and I always return home tired in the evening. I spend my evening resting and meet my kids who will have return home from school. The interaction with the gives me joy and hope.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
At my age of 61 years, I am still forced to do casual labor like Charcoal burning inorder to provide for my family basic needs like my children educate, food and shelter. This job is laborious and requires a lot of energy which has deteriorate my health day by day. I have desired to have an alternative source of income but this have not materialize. Therefore, I consider lack of a reliable source of income to support my family has been my biggest hardship.
