How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My initial goal was to purchase a piece of land for my children because we only had a small piece. As they grow up I also have to think of their future and where they will construct their house when they become of age. This was my greatest concern, and I am happy I achieved it. Therefore, at the moment, I do not have any additional goals that I did not have before receiving the transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give Directly is doing great work in providing financial support to the needy. It is a great way of empowering people and so much has improved in our village. I have seen children who had dropped out of school because their parents could not afford their fees going back to school for their studies. On the other hand, there is nothing I would say Give Directly is not doing well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought a dairy cow at KES 30000 with the second transfer. I did not have any cows previously because I could not afford them. We, therefore, have to budget for milk daily which is very costly. There are instances we go without breakfast whenever I do not have money. I am hopeful that in the future after it will have given birth then I will not only have an additional cow, but we shall have enough milk both for sale and family consumption. KES 22000 I spent on both foodstuffs and clothing for my children. Both their school uniforms and home clothes were worn out, and they had outgrown some of them. Seeing my children happy and satisfied is my greatest achievement.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
With my son at home that morning, I received the message with a lot of excitement after confirming that it was from GiveDirectly. The wait that I had after enrollment was worth and I thanked God when I confirmed that the word I had received back then had finally come true. I had to call my helper who accompanied me to the nearest shopping center where we collected the money and came back home after making some purchases.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the purchase of a lactating dairy cow that I am currently milking and selling the milk to the nearby collecting center. It has brought quite a lot of changes as I have been able to receive accumulated savings every month and an option of acquiring an advance whenever I need some finances in the middle of the month.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With a family of five, keeping only one cow on the field had never been the best idea especially in the dry seasons when it can not produce milk at all. With the first transfer, I saw it as a chance to mitigate the great challenge that had always kept me spending a lot on buying milk. I spent KES30000 to buy a lactating dairy cow that has seen me improve my saving habit every time I receive the monthly payments from the cooling plant, and has also allowed me to access advances from the milk buyers whenever I need some money before the end of the month. I also obtained KES5000 on obtaining a new piece of furniture, clothes worth KES6600 for both my son and me, and used the remaining amount on foodstuff for my household. I am grateful for all I have done within this short period and looking forward to the next transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I aspire to start dairy farming as it will enable me to uplift myself financially and developmentally through milk cashout. Milk has been consistently in high demand and has been a hot cake in our area, this made me have the dream of venturing into the enterprise with no success since what I earn from my casual job of weeding farms for pay is earning me little income, KES 300 per day. With this money I see my dream coming true as I will spare KES 60000 to buy two dairy cows to jumpstart the business. I recently demolished my old house and started buildings a new one which is currently under construction, this money gives me peace of mind as I will plan KES 30000 to complete this construction have a good shelter. With the remaining amount, I will buy food and clothing for myself.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am usually happy during the morning hours, this is the time I am energetic and healthy working on my casual job. Other than good health I am happy since I will get some cash at the end of the day to buy food and other basic needs for myself.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been struggling financially to provide food and other basic needs for myself. In our area, the available jobs are mainly weeding farms for pay which gives me about KES 300 at the end of the day. This is not sufficient to support my basic needs and initiate developmental projects.
