How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals for now that I can mention. I am happy that I have a permanent house courtesy of GiveDirectly. Initially, I used to sleep in a small temporary house which forced my children to sleep at their friend's houses for years. I am happy that for now we even have extra rooms to host neighbors and even store some of my properties.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the organization operates uniquely. The money was sent directly into my Mpesa account without involving governmental officials. Also, there were no restrictions in regards to how one would wish to spend the cash transfers. I do not see any part that GiveDirectly needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying gravel, iron sheets, nails, iron sheets, and the labor charges at a total of KES 45000. I had intended to construct a permanent house because the previous one was just a traditional hut that was not spacious enough. I was so worried that it would collapse anytime. I also cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my son who is in standard four. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my five family members. I am happy that we no longer skip meals like before because my spouse is the breadwinner who depends on the odd jobs. Most of the days we couldn't afford to get the basic needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
What a beautiful day it way! I can remember that day vividly, it was on September 16, 2021 at around 9am when I was in the forest fetching some firewood for sale hen I received the transfer message. I was overwhelmed since I hadn’t seen such huge amount of money in my life before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since then, I used to see bock houses in other people’s households and admiring them secretly. As at now there is a big difference in my life because I own a block house. I hadn’t imagined that one day I was going to have one but thanks to GiveDirectly who made a permanent mark in my life. I will live to remember GiveDirectly for what they did to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the money, my husband and I sat and planned on how we were going to spend the money. We agreed on building a house because the one we had was not in a good state. We bought 22 bags of cement for KES 13200.00, 850 pieces of interlocking blocks for KES 8500.00, a trip of building sand for KES 4000.00, a trip of hard corals for KES 3500.00 and the labour charges of the contractor. Having a grade 3 child, I took KES 2000.00 and paid her schools fees so that I be free from thinking on how I will pay for her later on. The saved the remaining amount for the family needs and upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this transfer means renovating my house. For the past 2 years, I have been living in a house that is almost collapsing but due to financial constraints, I have not been able to rebuild it. This has been my worry because I feel that it may fall and end our life. I intend to spend 30,000 shillings to repair it so that we can stay without any fear. Other than that, I plan to spend the remaining amount to purchase a pair of oxen and a plow so that during the rainy season can enable me to cultivate a large piece of land and have many harvests for my family consumption.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is my happiest part of the day. It is at this time when I can cultivate my land comfortably. Unlike in the evening when I am too tired
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Securing a good job for my family has been the biggest hardship I have faced in life. He works as a casual laborer at our nearby center, his wages are not enough to fulfill all our needs such as food and shelter. Hence making it difficult for us to renovate our house.
