How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
From the time I received my transfer, I developed a new goal of expanding my shop. At first, my shop was negatively performing and it was at the verge of collapsing. Upon confirmation of my transfer, I prioritized to spend the whole of my transfer on acquiring additional stock. Prior to the second transfer, my business was poorly performing because I could hardly realize a sale of KES 2,000 daily. I am so happy that currently I can raise KES 4,000 on a daily basis. In in the long run, it is going to help me much because through it I shall be able to get food for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in how they relate with the community members during the enrollment process. The staffs are professional. This is demonstrated through the way they conduct themselves and how they relate with the community members. In addition, they can visit every household without any form of biasness. Moreover, direct cash transfer is helpful because it greatly boosts our living standards. After all, individuals are at liberty to decide on what to buy that can meet their immediate needs. In contrast, I have not yet observed what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being obsessed to revive my shop that was on the verge of collapsing. I, therefore, spent KES 40,000 on buying clothes and shoes among other key commodities for sale in my shop. I also bought KES 13,000 on buying cooking utensils for the sale. As a result, there is a great improvement in the performance of my business currently. This has given me hope that I shall be able to raise additional income for my family and this is going to be beneficial for the family. Thanks to GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I was at home busy with the house chores. When I saw a text message showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and happiness, I then broke the news to my mother who also confirmed to have received the same. We then embarked on planning how we would withdraw our transfers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to complete the house that was left halfway before due to financial constraints. In addition to that, I was able to stock up on my shop business. I am happy and overjoyed with the fact that I was able to achieve a lot in a short period.GiveDirectly has changed our lives amazingly thus we are grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a businesswoman and a mother of three children. I had started constructing a house for my family but it was left halfway due to financial constraints. When GiveDirectly promised us the unconditional transfer, I knew that I would be able to accomplish the house project. Thus I used a sum of KES 35,000 in completing the house. I then used KES 16,000 in buying more items for my business. I am optimistic that With the additional stock I would be able to attract more income. I am grateful for the much that I have accomplished in a short period.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a boost to my income. I am a tailor by profession, I have a sewing machine but I depend on customers to come with their material to stitch for them. My plan is therefore to spend 40000 KES to expand my business by purchasing different types of materials whereby my patrons will be obtaining fabrics from my shop. In this, I will attract other clients and make more profits.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of December, my husband bought a motorcycle from his savings over the year. This made me happy because as a family we now have a means of transport that is available for us to any area we need to get on.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial crisis is the challenge that I am currently facing. This is because I am the main provider in the family, my husband is a palm wine tapper with a seasonal job. Considering my little income of 4000 per month, it is can not cater all our needs like food as well as paying school fees for my kids.
