How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal that I did not have before which is to construct a house for my sons who will soon be teenagers. I feel they need enough privacy furthermore I will earn more respect by doing so. This is because in our culture, sharing the same house with your grownup children is not good at all.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I do not see anything GiveDirectly is not doing well as far as my village is concerned. Ever since they came to our region, there is a positive impact on the lives of people they visited. We now have decent houses, all our kids are now in school, and the majority of us own livestock.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying examination fees of KES 3000 for my seven children in primary school. The cash came in good time because they were to miss the exams which would drag them behind hence affecting their performance. I also bought five goats KES 20000. I intentionally purchased them for my children once they transition to higher levels of education. Also, I bought building poles, iron sheets and all the necessary materials that were required for the setting up of a new house. The previous one could not fit all my seven family members. They have therefore been sleeping at my friend's houses for all that long. It is now a relief to them because they no longer experience all sorts of discrimination like before. With the remaining amount,nt I bought food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7am while sitting on my bed when I heard a message tone twice from my phone. Since I do not know how to read, I contacted my helper who was not far to come and interpret the message for me. I jumped up in happiness when she confirmed to me that I had received the first transfer of KES 55000.00 from GiveDirectly. The reason for that great happiness was the state on how my house was, I knew a solution had been got.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, I used to solely depend on my husband who used to cut logs to make charcoals for sale. Long ago, we used to help one another in the exercise but later on I developed some chest problems thus depending on my husband to do the tiring work alone. After getting the first transfer, we decided to buy a motorbike which relieved him from the tiring work and he has now taken a break from it. He is using the motorbike in carrying people from one place to another at a fee. If it were not for GiveDirectly, he would be still on the tiring charcoal business which is not reliable.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money, I first bought 14 pieces of iron sheets for KES 14420.00. I bought these iron sheets because my house is a grass-thatched one and the grasses are rotten thus leaking profusely. I also paid a bill of KES 5500.00 at a nearby shop where we used to take some foodstuff. Thereafter, I bought a nice second-hand motorbike so as to start a light transport business in order to have an income-generating activity. I used KES 29000.00 to purchase the motorbike and as of now it serves my family well.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means safety for me. I have been living under a structure that is unfit for habitation. The house is in ruins. Holes are all over and it is doorless. Being surrounded by bushes, the risk of being harmed by wild animals is very high. I plan to build a new house which will roughly cost 25,000 KES. With a new decent house, life will be peaceful due to the guaranteed security.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Nothing beats the happiness of seeing your children very healthy. Life is not up to our expectations but I am thankful for my children's fitness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the current challenge I am facing. I have a family of 8 children. With such a huge family, foodstuffs are consumed in plenty. Maintaining their consumption ration is very difficult due to the low income I make from charcoal burning. I approximately make 4,000 KES per month and the required amount to sustain us for a whole month is 9,000 KES.
