How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different now because money has transformed my life in so many ways and I will forever be thankful to GiveDirectly. Through the transfers, I managed to renovate my house, and it's now permanent. The previous one was grass thatched though quite spacious but my wish always to own a modern. This is because I have been exchanging the roof which was a bit expensive and I had thought of a permanent solution on the same. Having constructed it, I no longer have to worry about any kind of insecurities or even the rains and I will be saving that I have been using to renovate my house yearly and support other household needs. Also with the goats, they serve as the assets that I can rely on in case of any emergency unlike before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectloy does well by empowering every deserved household in my village. Actually, the whole village has transformed positively in terms of developments which include new houses, livestock and sending our children to school. In addition, a bigger percentage of my village mates now own mobile phones which have made us to communicate with our loved ones easier not forgetting to send and receiving money. In other words, I do not see any part GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying four goats that I am currently rearing in my homestead. Also, I bought building materials which include iron sheets, cement, sand, timber, and nails. This was for the renovation of my house becasue it was a temporary one and almost collapsing. It is now decent and I will forever be grateful to this organization. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was doing some cleaning in my compound when I received the Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and I even left what I was doing and started planning on how best I could utilize the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to renovate my house. Currently it is a permanent and a spacious one. I had been longing to renovate it for years but I could not afford it due to my low financial status. Previously it was in a poor state, the walls had cracks and a leaky roof. Whenever it rained especially when it was at night, we could not sleep till dawn. I now feel good as a parent I am now in a position to invite my friends unlike before whereby I felt embarrassed to invite them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I had already bought some other building materials earlier on, I spent a small portion of my first transfer on buying some bags of cement to renovate my house which was semi-permanent. I also bought some decent clothes and sufficient foodstuffs for my family. In addition, I bought three goats which I am currently keeping in my compound.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me complete the construction of my house which has stalled. My son build me the house but was not able to complete. Completing it with my own money will show at least an effort from my side. I will also use 150 USD to buy at least 3 goats. I once reared goats and it was a good venture. This is an opportunity to start all over again. They multiply very fast.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend most of my day in the farm .I mainly farm maize and cassava. Evening comes with a lot of fatigue for me. I feel happy in the evening especially when I have gotten food to eat and therefore I can sleep at ease.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I fully depend on farming to get income. However, crop farming has a lot of challenges ranging from lack of rains to poor soils in this region. This has lead to very low production making me struggle to get food. I am getting old and I am no longer able to do other jobs to supplement what I get from my farm. I used to do weaving but my fingers are now weak. My biggest worry for now is getting food now that old age is catching up.
