How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was able to fence my entire farm using my first transfer and since I depend on dairy farming, it is my wish to partition the uncultivated part into several partitions. My livestock will be feeding on the grass from one side at a time while the grass on the other side continues to grow. Even though I do not have finances to use in achieving this, I believe that God will make a way just the way He recently led GiveDirectly to our village.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The fact that everyone in our village was enrolled and received the promised money, we were able to achieve our goals. GiveDirectly did well in putting smiles on our faces and I do not see anything that it did not do well since, personally, I became so happy when they decided to give us financial aid.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on dairy farming and I sometimes sell eggs from the chicken that I keep to get money for our basic needs since I am growing old each day and I do not have the energy for doing casual jobs. My house was made of mud and due to my age, I was unable to walk for a long distance looking for clay to use in repairing it. Because of this, my house was always dusty since I had to wait till school closes so that my grandchildren would help me. Upon receiving my transfer, I spent KES 49000 on the purchase of gravel, cement, sand, ballast and paid for the labor of cementing the floors, and used the remaining KES 3200 on one sack of maize for our consumption. I am happy that cleaning this house has become easy and my clothes are no longer dusty.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out in the fields herding my cows when I heard my phone ringing notifying me of an incoming SMS. I decided to check it because it was those days that we had been told that the transfer might arrive. As a result, we were eagerly waiting and checking our phones every time it rings. I could not believe what I saw and I became so happy when I learned that I had received KES 55000 on my phone. I left the cows and I headed back home because I could not keep the good news all to myself. I informed my husband when I got home and he was so happy too. We celebrated as we discussed how the money is going to change our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that the transfer has brought into our lives is that having bought the barbed wire and the fencing poles, we are now sure that we are going to achieve what we have always wanted to do. When we finish fencing, the cows will no longer be going to our farm and that of our neighbors to destroy crops. There will hence be no more disagreements between us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money on buying barbed wire and fencing poles. I had always wanted to do so to prevent the cows from going into the farm and destroying my crops and that of others. I was not able to achieve this before because I didn't have money. I am a small-scale subsistence farmer, the little produce that I get from my farm is what sustains us as a family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I can improve my livestock farming. I will spend the money from GiveDirectly on buying a dairy cow at about KES 40,000. I will then use about KES 40,000 on fencing and paddocking the land. I will buy some poles and barbed wire for this. This improvement will enable me to earn about KES 200 per day. The money will go a long way in providing for the children of my sister who left them to me when she passed on. These orphans are in secondary school, and it is a responsibility bestowed on me to educate them. This is the reason why I am investing in getting a stable daily source of income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. I wake up as early as 6 am. I then embark on household chores when I am still energetic for the day. I am happy at such a time, seeing my family getting ready with a good breakfast to strengthen them whole day. I am excited to have them take their first meal of the day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship is financial constraint. I have a huge family of 5, among them are two orphans and my husband's mother in her old age. I am a caregiver yet I only rely on some few chicken for income. With about KES 50 per day from selling eggs, I am struggling to provide food for the household as well as school fees for the kids.
