How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer as I had planned, I developed a goal of doing a business to generate some income. Through intensive thinking and conducting some research, I realized that with a grocery I can do well. Therefore, I am sourcing for some capital so that I can start the grocery shop to earn a living instead of being dependent.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a hand-holding organization that stood not only for me but for the whole village. Initially, I had a slam-like structure where I used to sleep but through this organization, I am now a proud villager with a good and decent house. My village members are also happy because using the transfers, everyone did what he was desperate of doing and they are now grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I combined it with KES 20000.00 which I had kept from the first transfer. Upon withdrawing, I first completed my house which I had started using the first transfer. The roofing was lacking 10 pieces of iron sheets which I bought for KES 8000.00. I also paid the contractor a labor charge of KES 7000.00. Thereafter, I bought three Galla goats for KES 24000.00 and a cow for KES 12000.00. I had desired to have high-breed livestock because they have a higher value when the right selling time comes therefore I bought them intending to sell to generate money. I also took KES 3000.00 and paid school fee arrears for my five primary school children. Since I was using a small traditional bed, I opted to buy a modern standard bed with a mattress for KES 11000.00. I did this to have a comfortable sleeping place because where I used to sleep was not comfortable at all. One could wake up very tired.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 4 PM when I was from my daily hustle when my mobile phone started vibrating continuously. I was so nervous but since I am illiterate my son offered to check where the message was from. Upon reading, he realized that it was from GiveDirectly. They had finally debited my first KES 55000 as proposed a few months ago. I was overwhelmed with joy and I remember informing all my family members on the same.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a decent house that is very spacious. The initial one was not in good condition at all, it had an old roof and unstable walls. During the winter seasons, it was so stressful because we had to so squeeze ourselves in one corner of the house till the rain stops. Also used to affect my children in some way especially at night when they wanted to do their school assignments, they couldn't because there was no ample space. Being their mother, who is also the breadwinner, has been stressing me for a long. I have always been praying to God to see us through the troubles we have been encountering. I am grateful that my prayer was fully answered, we now sleep in a better place. I no longer have to worry about the heavy downpours or the insecurity.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying twenty-four pieces of iron sheets at KES 19200 building poles at KES 8000, nails, timber at KES 5000, and gave the mason KES 7000. I intended to construct a new house because the previous one was almost falling and not spacious enough to accommodate my family which is comprised of seven members. Also, I cleared fees arrears of KES 4000 for my five kids. I am happy they are studying peacefully without any disturbances. Later on, I bought a goat at KES 4000 which I am now keeping in my homestead as an asset. With the remaining amount of money, I purchased foodstuffs for my family and other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a strong house for me. The structure am currently in is almost falling down because it was constructed long time ago and the poles used were not strong. This opportunity will be of great importance if I will manage to put up a two roomed house for my family. In terms of security and shelter, I will be sorted for a very long time.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my brothers who work in mombasa last year October bought me a phone. I had never had a phone before and that really made me happy a lot.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the hardest problem in my family. In this area, we normally depend on farming to get enough food for our family. The rains in the past two years have never been reliable or enough to produce food. Everytime I plant, the crop die because of drought. This situation has subjected us to a very hard time. Most of the time my children miss food and they have to go school in that state.
