How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I don't have any additional goal for now may in future when I'll get some money I'll think of doing something meaningful. For now I just want to concentrate on rearing my livestock.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
For the first time in a couple of years, we have had time to spend night together as family and this has allowed us as parents to bond more with our kids.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend 49000 KES of the recent transfers to build a two local bedroom house. This is because we were living in a tiny single room which was also very weak and we didn't have privacy as parents and it couldn't accommodate all of us. I never liked how my older kids would go looking for someone in our neighborhood to host them at night and I prayed that one day, I'll have a house that can accommodate my family and finally I was able to achieve my dream through the support of GiveDirectly. I spend the remaining balance of 5500 to clear fees arrears and I'm happy that my kids will have ample time to concentrate on their studies once schools reopens.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 AM when I was at my daily hustle when a message notification popped in. Since I was so busy I ignored it and went ahead with the task that I was handling. Suddenly, I saw another notification and that is when I became more curious. I decided to check who it could be only to realize that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overjoyed wig happiness and I remember having to leave the job and going back home. I had to share the news with my family members and they couldn't contain their joy as well.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily is that through the transfers, I was able to renovate my house by adding another room. Previously it only had a single room which could not accommodate all my family members. Therefore, this forced my children to shelter at their friend's houses which I felt it was not safe for them. Their friends had bad morals in society and I was worried that this might affect my children as well. As their parent, I have been longing to sleep under the same roof with them but the situation could not allow me. I was always stressed up considering I only relied on seasonal odd jobs. I however trusted that this would come to an end someday. I am so glad that I was finally able to fulfill my dream. My children no longer have to move from one compound to the other in such of shelter. May God continue to bless GiveDirectly for all the impact they have brought unto our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer on buying the building materials which comprises iron sheets KES 8000, building poles KES 8000, nails, timber, and transportation KES 10000. I bought all these intending to add a room since I previously had a single room house which could not accommodate all my seven family members. Also, I bought a new bed and a high-density mattress at KES 8000 I am so glad that I no longer experience so much pain every night as I used to do. In addition, I cleared school fees for my children and I am happy they are no longer being sent home severally. I also bought new school uniforms and new clothes for the Christmas celebrations for my kids. With the remaining amount, I bought two goats and enough foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means reliable source of income to my household. Currently, I am doing casual jobs of charcoal work, the job is tiresome and the earning is very little of KES 6000 per month. This amount can not fully support all the basic needs of the family. I am planning to spend KES 4000 of my first transfer to start a kiosk that will act as source of income and lam assured of getting a profit of KES 500 per day. I will use the remaining amount of my first transfer to buy 5 goats that will act as a long term investment project to my household. With my second transfer, I am planning to construct a separate structure for my children and this will restore the respect that I have lost for long.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I am free and I can rest a lot.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. This is because I am doing charcoal work that earns me only KES 6000 per month. Due to this, I have been struggling to provide for my family and sometimes I fail to put food on the table. Something that has ashamed me for long.
