How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current goal is to start a poultry project at my homestead. I plan to use a portion of the money from my transfers and the small profits from my charcoal business to launch the project in the coming months. Once it takes off, it will become an additional source of income to help support my family. This new venture will ease the burden of paying school fees for my two children, unlike before, when I struggled a lot. It has never been easy for me to provide both their daily meals and their school fees. The poultry project will provide a steady and more reliable income, relieving the financial stress we've been experiencing. I'm hopeful and excited about this new beginning and determined to make it succeed for the sake of my family's future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My major source of income has been burning and selling charcoal, which is no longer a lucrative job due to high competition in the market. This has made it difficult for me to provide for my family's basic needs, such as education and food. Therefore, upon receiving the cash, I spent nearly $60 on school fees for my two children, who attend a nearby school. I am happy that they now have a stable educational environment and no longer face disruptions due to unpaid fees, as was the case before. With the assurance of receiving monthly cash, I am confident that their education journey will be smooth, paving the way for a brighter future. Additionally, food insecurity has been a frequent issue due to the prolonged drought, and there has been little hope of harvesting. Therefore, I spent around $42 to ensure we had enough food to combat hunger in my household.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
For now, the plan that I have in mind is to start a chicken project within my compound. I plan to use the money from my transfers and the profits from my charcoal business to kick off this project by next month. Once I succeed, this will be an additional source of income to support my family. This new venture will make it easier to pay fees for my children, unlike before, when I used to strain a lot. The chicken project will provide a steady and more reliable income, reducing the financial stress we've been facing. I am hopeful and excited about this new beginning, and I am determined to make it work for the betterment of my family's future.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My children's school fees have been my headache for quite some time because, as of now, I depend on the charcoal business, which is no longer profitable. Therefore, I had no option but to use about $68 to pay school fees for my two children in primary and secondary schools. My heart is full to see them in class and fetch a good education, which will make their lives and generations brighter. The burden of unpaid fees and the fear of their education being interrupted often kept me up at night. But now, knowing they are secure in their schooling brings a profound sense of relief and joy. Also, one of my daughters was feeling unwell, and this has been stressing me. I did not have sufficient cash to take her to a good hospital for a checkup, but after receiving the cash, I used $34 to take her to the hospital, and she was diagnosed with stomach ulcers. She is currently under medication, and I am happy she is recovering. Her health had been a constant worry, but now that she's getting proper treatment, a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Being able to address her medical needs without delay has been a blessing, and I am deeply grateful for the support that has allowed me to ensure her well-being.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Looking ahead, my goal for the year ahead is to start a chicken project within my compound. I plan to allocate $20 monthly from the transfers towards this venture, aiming to generate additional income to support my family. Establishing a stable source of revenue through this project will provide me with peace of mind, knowing that my family's needs will be met consistently. This signifies a step towards greater financial stability and security for my loved ones, and I am committed to its success.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
To sustain my family of ten, I rely on selling charcoal as my primary source of income. Previously, our situation was bad, and we constantly struggled to secure food due to the scarcity of odd jobs. However, since receiving these transfers, I have experienced a significant improvement in our livelihood. With this assistance, I can now comfortably cover my children's school fees and ensure an adequate food supply for my family. During the Christmas season, I allocated $34 to purchase rice and maize flour, essential for our celebrations. Additionally, $58 was dedicated to clearing an outstanding school fee debt for my son in Secondary school, enabling him to continue with his studies. The remaining $10 was utilized to replenish household essentials that had run out. I am truly grateful to GiveDirectly for being my source of support, and I cannot imagine where I would be without their assistance.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After several years of laboring in low-wage jobs, primarily focused on selling and producing charcoal, I've recently embarked on a new venture within my village: selling second-hand clothing. This represents a significant milestone for me, as it promises to liberate me from the demanding and strenuous task of charcoal production. All my savings are now being directed into expanding this business, which is my sole source of income. Previously, my livelihood was heavily dependent on the laborious process of burning and selling charcoal, a vocation that fell short of meeting the needs of my family. I am overjoyed by the prospect that I will no longer struggle to provide for my children's education. With this new business, I am confident that I can secure a bright future for them and enable them to pursue higher studies, a dream I hold in the highest regard. I have set my sights on growing this business, and I anticipate that the monthly transfers will play a pivotal role in helping me achieve this goal.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been sustaining myself by engaging in low-paying jobs like charcoal production and sales, which have been my primary source of income. Meeting the basic needs of my household has been a constant challenge, but I was determined not to let my children miss out on their education. I made every effort to ensure their school fees were paid on time. Receiving these transfers was a tremendous relief because it enabled me to pay their fees in advance. I used $60 of the recent transfer to cover the educational expenses of my three children, and I am delighted to report that they are now comfortably attending school. This has also given me the time to prepare for their next term's payment with confidence, as I know I will receive a monthly transfer. Additionally, two of my children are in high school and rent a place near their school. I used part of the transfer to cover their monthly rent, which had accumulated some arrears. This stability has ensured that my children can continue their education without interruption. The remaining portion of the transfer went to essential food items like maize flour, beans, and sugar, which ensured that my family had an adequate food supply. It brings me immense joy to see my family enjoying three nutritious meals a day. I also utilized some of the funds to purchase household necessities like toiletries, filling in the gaps where our essentials were lacking.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We've had a lot of rain in the last month, so I'm planning to plant some crops for sale. The proceeds will allow me to start a poultry company, which will protect me if the rains fail again.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We live in a very dry environment, and finding food and water is quite tough. I am a metal artist, and my business has been struggling recently. I spent $60 on food since we went for days without eating. I was able to settle my children's school fee arrears with $30, and I'm grateful that I was able to keep them in school. The remainder of the funds were used to cover our day-to-day expenses.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
It has been a long since my region was blessed with enough rain to sustain crop farming. The persistent drought has impaired crucial activities that could have allowed me to produce food in my field. As a result, the only way my family can survive is by buying food, which is expensive. I wish and pray for the rains to commence in the next year for my family to cultivate enough food and water. At least this will allow me to spend any money I earn on other things, like school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In order to provide for my wife and ten children, I make and sell charcoal for an income. However, the scant earnings from this practice can only secure food and nothing beyond that. As a result, sometimes am in debt for my children's tuition fees at their schools. Spending Give Directly’s cash transfers on school fees is something that I have been deliberate about over the last three months. From the latest three cash, I directed a total of $82 towards clearing the fee balances of my two sons. I am relieved to have settled that, which has freed my mind to concentrate on other things. The remaining funds, amounting to $20, went toward food to ensure the household had enough meals as I sought more money.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of my recent cash transfer on paying school fees for my two children who are in primary school. This has been the hardest challenge for me considering that I have a family of eight who has been depending on me. It hasn't been easy at will because I have been earning very low profits from the charcoal business. Therefore my children have always been at home almost every moment which has been affecting them academically and psychologically. I feel relieved now because the monthly cash transfer will empower me enough to settle their arrears timely.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Over the last few months the cost of living has gone inconsiderably high which has extremely impacted us negatively since we could barely sustain ourselves prior to changes. Not forgetting the ongoing drought which has not made less difficult but worse since we have any harvest. So as soon as the funds arrived, I used KES 2,000 and purchased four packets of maize flour and two kilograms of beans that would allow my family and I to have a meal. Then I used the balance which was KES 1,000 and paid school fees for my three children because they were literally on the verge of being kicked out of school.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Now that I have received the funds, I am financially empowered, and this has opened my mind to stop the destruction of the environment in the name of earning a living. This is something that I credit to GiveDirectly and soon our problems will be over when the weather is favorable for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With no permanent job, I have had to depend on casual jobs for survival. I currently cut down trees, burn the logs, make charcoal and sell to potential buyers. The little I earn from the sale of charcoal is very little and is only enough to buy food for the family for few days. They all depend on me for their school. The eldest is currently in form three and requires money for rent, food upkeep and school fees. The rest are in primary school and they also need stationeries to facilitate their learning. For a long period now, I have been struggling to provide for them what they need. Upon receiving my second transfer, I spent KSH 1000 on my eldest son to pay rent and also buy food while in school. I also spent KSH 1000 to pay school fees balances for my two children who are in primary school class 8 and 6, respectively. I also bought some examination essential materials for my son who is about to sit for his final exam. Finally, I spent the remaining KSH 1000 to buy food for the entire family because we had any left in the house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When the transfer came in, I was doing my usual routine, which is, cutting down trees for charcoal manufacturing. . So, I finished what I was doing and went to pay my children's school fee arrears since they had been sent home from school due to it. Receiving it made me feel blessed as I had no idea where I would get the money from.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There's not much difference I have noted so far since this is my first transfer. Even so, I can at least say My debts have been reduced, I am more at ease and I can work better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of seven children, two of whom are yet to join school. In my charcoal manufacturing business, I only make KES1,200 bi-weekly. This has helped me in providing for my family. Even so, I have been struggling with school fee payments for my five children. Before the transfer came in, I had arrears of KES700 so I used KES600 from the transfer to reduce the arrears. The other KES600 I used to buy five packets of maize flour

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I value education and I am blessed to have children who also know the importance of being educated. I have eight children, three boys and five girls. Four of them are still in school and out of the four two are in their finally year. For the candidates I want them to have an effortless year, no interruptions of being sent back home for school fees and lacking nothing. I will use these transfers to pay their school fees, I want them to get good grades and get a chance to join colleges of their choice.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children are my source of joy, every day I come back home from a days work and I see them happy and well, it gives me enough satisfaction. It motivates me to keep working hard to ensure they have a brighter future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a casual worker, I burn charcoal for a living. The income is not sufficient to support all my families needs. Business has been abit shaky this year, the famine has not made it easy for us. People are not buying charcoal as they used to and this affects my production. I previously would burn about 7 bags of charcoal but of late three or four is what I burn and sell to customers.
