How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year, we intend to expand our farming practices by saving enough money from selling milk that we produce and putting more land under agriculture. Improving our agricultural activities will definitely improve our living standards as a family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by enrolling every household within the village without any form of bias and giving support in form of cash. This gives each person freedom to choose how to spend the money and how best it would be of benefit to them. Looking at the house that I built with this cash and even the clothes that I bought for my family gives me so much joy and happiness . On the other hand, I do not see anything that GiveDirectly could have done better. Everything that they do is just perfect and they should continue doing it in the way they are doing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $400 of the second transfer to complete the construction of a house I had built using the first transfer. I then used the remaining amount of $130 to purchase food, clothes and other basic household needs for my family. Before receiving this transfer, my family and I were living in a mud walled house. I had always desired to build a better house for my family but with the little income that I made from small scale farming and the huge demand to pay school fees could not allow me accomplish this. I am so happy that the house that we built is almost complete and we will be living in a timber walled hence forth.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was very early in the morning that day and we had just woken up ready to face the day ahead. I heard my phone ring and upon checking, I was met with a pleasant surprise from GiveDirectly confirming that I had finally been sent the money that I had been promised earlier that month. The amount of joy that filled me cannot be explained. I informed my children who were equally very happy to hear this and we later put our heads together to implement whatever plans that we had
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the kitchen that I am almost building. I have been using a grass thatched kitchen and day in day out it was growing old and becoming delapidated. I had no means of putting up one and I would not have had means if GiveDirectly had not cone to my aid. Paying school fees fir my children was straining the little resource that we have as a family from small scale farming and from the casual work that my husband engaged in. I look forward to having the house completed once I receive my second transfer and accomplishing much more. My house will now be more comfortable and more decent like that of any other well to do families within our villages. I am so happy about this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Used part of my money to buy food for the family and a huge chunk of it say KES 50000 to buy building materials that will help me build a new kitchen for us. For a long time, I have had the desire to build a new kitchen that is roofed with iron sheets and the little amount of income that I got from my small scale farming could not allow me to do this. I had a child in college that made all my efforts from farming strained and when I finally received money from GiveDirectly, I made a conscious decision to put up one. I am not yet there but at least I have been able to buy most of the required building materials and only waiting for the second transfer so that I may start building. I feel so much happy and lucky to be part of this life changing program.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means better housing. My kitchen is old and is leaking when it rains and sometimes stressful to cook during the rainy season. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 30000 to construct an iron-roofed house. This will help me cut the cost of purchasing grass as it was grass thatched. Getting grass was also a challenge since it has become rare to get grass enough to rethatch the whole house due to limited land.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After I sold all the livestock to pay for my daughter's academic fee I was devastated since it was my source of income. I had a small banana plantation and it has matured into eatable fruits. I can now sell some to generate income and also a source of food for my family. This has brought joy and happiness into my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. I have a daughter in college and it has been a challenge getting money to pay for her academic fee. I have sold all my livestock which was also my source of income to pay for her school fees. The last cow I had died recently and I am now worried that I would not be able to pay for her school fees yet she was about to sit for her final exams.
