How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I used to operate a business of collecting sand from the water channels and selling them to people until the day I fell, became sick and since then, I have developed some pack pains. Because of this, I had to stop this business and it is now my wish to start another one of buying and selling maize in our locality. By doing so, I will be able to make money each day without engaging in strenuous activity.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did a splendid job by deciding to give people financial aid and I do not see anything that they did not do well. With the money, people were able to achieve their goals in life, feed, and dress well like people who have white color jobs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving my transfer, I spent KES 35000 to buy a dairy cow and KES 14000 on three three-seater seats. We settled on this as a family since buying milk has been our norm. In addition, we did not have enough seats as we had only three which are old-fashioned despite having built a bigger house with a spacious living room. I spent the remaining KES 3500 to buy some food for the family. I am glad that I was able to achieve this with the help from GiveDirectly as I would not have been able to achieve them on my own.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was alone at home that morning when I received a message notification from GiveDirectly. I could not doubt any information about the transfer after reading the message as I was expecting it that day. I had to withdraw the money after informing other members of my household, and made the first purchase since we had already planned on how to spend them.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the joy of my regained health after a serious injury that I had sustained after an accidental fall down a week before receiving the transfer. Visiting the hospital and getting good attention from the doctor who carried out the check-up and treatment process was the best feeling to me. Were it not for the support from GiveDirectly, it would have been impossible for me to get immediate help as the cost of medication was so high that I could not afford it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I received the first transfer when I was nursing the cuts and abrasions on my arms and legs and also waist sprains that turn out to have involved soft tissues injuries after further examinations in the hospital. This transfer was of great help as the hospital bill shot to KES16000 after the examination, and I was glad to clear it all after receiving the medication. With the remaining amount, I spent KES30000 on obtaining construction materials and paying the labor charges on the construction of a new house for my family. We had been living in a small house with a poorly maintained interior as it was getting old. The construction of a new one is a great step ahead as it would have taken me more than a year to save enough towards the same structure that I managed to construct within two weeks after receiving the transfer. I used the remaining amount on obtaining foodstuff for my household and also paid school fees for my five children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving means a better and spacious house for my family. We have a single house that is not enough to accommodate a family of 8. Having this house will provide privacy for us and my grown up children. Since, we will building a new a house we are approximating to use around 40,000 KES in our first transfers for purchasing materials and cost of labour. The rest of the transfer we will invest in livestock keeping so to generate income for us in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Usually, I begin my day by doing household chores and preparing children for school. Later on in the midday I go looking for casual jobs to atleast raise some money to meet family basic needs. Mostly during evening hours we are paid and that is my happiest part of the day since I know my family will not sleep without food.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Feeding my family is the biggest hardship we have faced. We depend on casual jobs where we are paid weekly of around 750 KES. This will have to cater family basic needs, school fees and others as little as it is we just survive with it.
