How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My future plan is to continue educating my children until they finish school. Build me and my sons a permanent house since the current one is old and too small for us. Lastly, continue working hard on my farm to get a good harvest and sell it to support my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I thank GiveDirectly for the far It has bought us. I am happy about the transfers I received for the two months, a sum of Kes. 110000 which I could not get anyhow. May God bless you. So far so good, I do not have any complaints at all but to say thank you.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the second transfer from GiveDirectly has been of great help to me and my family. It came at the right time and I thank God for it. Being that I am a single mother of two sons who are currently in high school and college, life has not been easy. I have been working extra hard both on my maize and beans farm in the hope to pay their school fees and buy food. It has been so hard supporting them and when I was on the verge of giving up, GiveDirectly came in. The second transfer helped the most in settling their school fees arrears of $. 500 and $. 50 in buying good, healthy food and some house utensils.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:00 pm when I received a message from GiveDirectly. I was not really expecting the transfer at that particular time and it came as a surprise to me. I shared the good news with the rest of my family and we were all very elated.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that we are one happier family right now than we were before we received the money. My child's grades in school improved instantly from a grade C- to a grade B+. This was largely attributed to the fact that I was able to pay his school fees for the whole term in full, something that I had never done before and which was causing disturbance on him psychologically hence affecting his overall performance. The fact that I was able to set aside some money and be able to start building a new house also brought so much joy to us as a family
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 20000 to pay school fees and to buy school uniforms for my child and used another KES 26000 to buy roofing sheets. The remainder was used to buy food and to cultivate a piece of land that I own. Without GD I would have relied on proceeds from farming to be able to raise the money needed which means some of the things that I did would have to wait a little longer before I could accumulate enough money to do so. Things like payment of school fees in lumpsum and purchasing of iron sheets would have to wait a little longer since it would require that I save money in bits and balance between spending on food and other needs of my family. I will always be indebted to GiveDirectly for the timely support that I received.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single mother of 2 boys. They are both in secondary school and I struggle to fend for them. Receiving this money will bring a paradigm shift in my life, top on the list is to build a better kitchen. The one I have at the moment is small, old, and dilapidated. It seeps water through and during the rainy season, we suffer a lot since we cannot cook in it as a result of the aforementioned. I feel so bad about the situation and there is not much I can do to salvage the situation since I do not have the needed money. I am so excited that this help has come at such a time like this, it will bring me a new lease of life since I will be able to build a modern iron-roofed kitchen. I intend to use KES 25000 for its construction and the rest of the money to pay for school fees and if it will remain I will use it to buy clothes.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I had been struggling to build a separate house for my boys and it had taken me a long time to build it. Sometime in March, I got help from my brother who gave me some money that I used for its completion. In our culture when the boys have undergone initiation they are given a separate house to stay. It had given me sleepless nights so to my boys since they were disgraced to go to the neighborhood to borrow a house to sleep in. We were so elated when the house was completed. I felt that I had made a bigger achievement and my boys are ever happy since then, they have a space to read and sleep.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I face a myriad of challenges as a result of lack of money. I am a woman of little means living from hand to mouth. Poverty is what has weighed me down. I am unable to pay school fees for my children and it worries me alot. They were sent home for fees last week and they are yet to return to school because I have not gotten the needed school fees of KES 20000 inclusive of the arrears. I have always wanted the best for my children to have the best education and become better people in the future and help me from the vicious cycle of poverty that has been part of me for sometime now. My dream for my children to have a better education seems to be elusive and it bothers me. Thanks for Give Directly for coming to our village to help us with their transfers, God's timing is the best. I see renewed hope and a bright future for my children.
