How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After accomplishing my main goal of owning a reliable source of income for the family, the new goal that I currently have is to construct a structure for poultry farming. At the moment, my chickens have a small and poor condition structure something that affects their productivity because they are crowded.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well in sending cash transfer to poor household in the society. In addition, the officer served us with politeness and respect. I do not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to start a shop business as a reliable source of income for my family. This is because the livestock rearing that I had been depending on is no longer sustainable. We have been experiencing drought in our area for over a year and most of our cattle died. I spend KES 50,000 to purchase the various stock in the shop like maize flour, sugar, soap, cooking oil and salt. Furthermore, I boosted my wife's tailoring shop by purchasing various linen. With the income from these businesses, we can comfortably meet our basic needs like food and educate our 3 children something that I am grateful for. The remaining amount assisted us in purchasing sufficient food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was far away from home at that time and the first thing I did was to call my wife who was at home with our children. She was equally very happy and got so anxious to meet me since then. We later put our minds together and restrategized on what we wanted to prioritize in doing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the house that I was able to build next to my work place-church. For a long time I have had the desire to build a house next to our church that would enable me to host friends, church members and even my family comfortably. I now feel so much relieved that I have been able to accomplish this. I know my family can come visting anytime and feel comfortable as though they were home. I feel so much indebted to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES20000 to buy a piece of land and used another KES 4000 to buy a mattress for my children while another KES 6000 was used to pay school fees for my childdren. The remaining amount was used to build a new house in my ministry place. At least I now feel very comfortable that I have a house that can host my family members whenever they visit me in my work place. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me realize some of my dreams earlier than I had expected. I feel so much comfortable in my place of work right now and can deliver the ministry that I do.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house construction project stalled because my father fell ill. The money I had saved went into his medication. With this money from Give Directly, I can now embark on finishing the construction of my house. This will cost me approximately 30,000 KES. I will expand a room for my children and then fix a decent door. My house does not have a door as we speak. My other needs include paying school fees for my child who is in a private school because I want the best education for her.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a pastor and a member of the leadership committee in our sub location. There has been a land tussle between the community and a private investor over 1,000 acres of land where the whole sub location sits. Last week we had a ruling that really brought joy in my life. The court ordered the investor to withdraw the case. I am proud of my effort as a member of the committee representing my sub location. I feel at peace as well since there is no longer a threat to our ancestral land.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My father has been in and out of hospital since the beginning of last year. He has a heart problem. He successfully underwent an operation last year in November. Every month, I take him to hospital for check up. This has really drained me financially. Every visit requires 13,000 KES. I am the first born son and therefore I have to shoulder most of the responsibility. I have my own family of two children who depend on me. It has not been easy.
