How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to be able to accumulate enough money through merry go round contributions in readiness to paying secondary school fees for my children who will be joining soon. We plan to engage more on casual work as well as the construction work that my husband engages in to raise more money to be able to keep contributing in the merry go round kitties. I am a mother of five and two of my children will be joining secondary school soon enough and we do not want to find ourselves in situations that we cannot be able to pay their fee in time. It has always been my prayer and determination to give the best in terms of education to my children. I am now in a position to concentrate more on this dream considering that the money that I received from GiveDirectly recently enabled me to realize most of my plans and hence the opportunity to concentrate on the education of my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us the freedom to choose how we were going to spend the money so reaceived. The fact that the money was also given to us as a grant and not a lon was something that I so much liked and appreciated about GiveDirectly. This two made me and a lot more people to appreciate the fund and put it into good use. I did not find anything that I thought GiveDirectly could do better or should improve. Thier work was just good and we are grateful.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 27000 to buy a water tank and used the remaining amount of almost KES 25000 to gather water from the roof of my house, buy clothes and food for the family. The decision to buy a water tank was because of the cosntant water shortage in our household and the long distances that we were often forced to travel in search of this otherwise very basic commodity. We are now extremely happy and reliefed as a family since we no longer have to travel for such long distances in search of water. Very often the water that we fetched from the rivers were unsafe for drinking but we did not have an option but to use it. I am personally so grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling me realize this. It means a lot to me and my family. My five children can now use the time that they would have used to go searching for water to improve their studies while I get more time to relax after hard days of work in peoples farms to earn income.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard my phone ring some few minutes past 9 am and I read the message that I had just received since I wanted to know its contents. My heart was filled with joy upon reading it and I quickly informed my spouse who became so happy and informed me that we should go and cash it out as a family so that we would plan on how to actualize our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
We used to live a hopeless life before GiveDirectly came for enrollment in our village. I am a vegetable vendor and my husband depends on available casual work. We could not achieve our goal of acquiring a dairy cow despite having pooled our income together as we would always end up spending everything we had on basic needs. Crop farming was never an option for us to be able to achieve our plans since we live in a small portion of land. With the transfer, we were able to acquire a dairy cow and this has changed our lives since apart from us achieving our goal as a family, we will soon stop buying milk from our neighbors when it calves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk has been my routine and it is usually expensive as I normally spend KES 40 daily on them apart from other things like maize flour. When I received my transfer, my priority was to purchase a dairy cow and I spent KES 39000 to achieve this. Using the remaining KES 15000, we purchased some food and 15 pieces of iron sheets that we are planning to use in building a more decent house since the one we live in is grass thatched and it is leaking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been struggling to see that we build a Kitchen made of iron sheets and an extra bedroom for our children but this has been in vain since we depend on what my husband who is the sole breadwinner brings from his casual job. His earning is little as KES 200 daily which makes us prioritize buying food and other family basic needs rather than thinking of constructing these houses. My Kitchen is old, grass-thatched and its roofing is leaking making us uncomfortable and feel ashamed. With this money, I will prioritize KES 70000 to construct my Kitchen and bedroom for my children and this will bring happiness and peace to my family. I will also consider adding another cow with KES 30000 to enable me to tap more income with the production and sale of milk, this will make us not struggle to provide and bring food to the table for the household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the evening hours after taking our evening meals. I feel relieved from daily duties and happy to have managed to provide something for my household and that the day has ended successfully.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Hunger and food shortages have been my biggest challenge. Our area is no longer arable for maize making us depend on maize for sale from another region which is expensive. With our little family earning having sufficient food for the family remains a dream. Skipping meals or even using less preferred food is the order of the day to us.
