How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I used to work as a vegetable vendor but closed the business before I gave birth seven months ago. Because of this, my spouse has been the only person vending for our family. It is my wish to revive this business once my child turns a year old so that I can use the profits to pay for our basic needs while he works towards clearing the motorcycle payments so that we can start other projects.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly officers were polite and respected everyone without discriminating against gender or age. During the baraza, they treated people equally and were keen to listen and address our concerns appropriately. In addition, we were given the freedom to decide how to spend the transfer to better our lives. This, to me, is what I can say that the organization does well and I do not see anything that it did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We bought a motorcycle on higher purchase terms five months ago and my spouse has been using it to offer taxi services around the neighborhood. Due to this, we have been making a weekly deposit of KES 2400 for it and when we received our second transfer, I spent KES 10000 to pay part of the remaining debt. In addition, I spent around KES 17000 to extend a room from our main house. We settled on this since we had been living in a one-room house and we had used a bedsheet to separate the sitting room from a section where we used to sleep. I have been staying at home for the last seven months since I am a nursing mother and I am glad that GiveDirectly came to our aid at a time when we needed help the most. Because of this, we have been able to achieve our goals that we had not been able to despite my spouse earning at least KES 500 a day from the bodaboda business since we're still paying for it. Using the remaining amount, I purchased some clothes and food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received my transfer, I knew that I will be able to accomplish the goals that I had, it was very early in the morning, I was still in bed when I was woken up by a loud ring tone, upon checking my phone, I saw a Mpesa notification, I was not expecting money from any showing that I had received money from anyone that morning, I was curious to know who had sent me money that early, upon confirming I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was so overwhelmed with joy, this was the best news that I had received in a long time.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My family is filled with joy, we now own a dairy cow which I was unable to buy all these years, I am also hopeful that soon I will be having a surplus of milk, food is also a challenge in our area especially during this drought season, I never had any stock of foodstuffs in the house before, I am grateful because I was able to buy two bags of maize that would last for a while.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For years now, I have been yearning to own a dairy cow but this was not possible due to financial constraints, I am a farmer, I depend also on casual jobs to earn a living, unfortunately, the little that I earn is not enough to cater for all the needs of my family, Upon receiving my transfer I thought of buying dairy cow so that we can get milk from it, thus I used KES 37,000, we then paid back a debt of KES 10,000 and lastly, we bought foodstuffs and clothes, we are grateful for the transfer that changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to realize my dream of purchasing a dairy cow. The one I have at the moment belongs to a relative. We attach a lot of significance in owning a cow to borrowing it. It is more dignified to own one than to borrow and a such I have all along wanted to own one. This has not been possible because of lack of enough finance. It is against this backdrop that I intend to buy a dairy cow worth KES 45000. I will use the rest of the money to build a house for my son.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Sometimes in June, we purchased a motorcycle on loan. We paid weekly. There has been a paradigm shift in terms of the income we get since we acquired it. We make up to KES 700 in a day and we are able to buy food and at the same time repay the loan. It boosted a lot our source of household disposable income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The most challenging we are facing at the moment is food insecurity. We have not been able to produce maize for consumption unlike in the past. We, therefore, buy from the nearby siongiroi market. It's expensive and sometimes we are unable to afford it. This makes us resort to cooking porridge for survival. At such times our small children complain a lot and the situation makes us feel bad and sorry for ourselves .
