How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer because I no longer buy milk anymore. Due to this, I am able to save the money I would otherwise use in buying milk. In addition, I have been able to clear this year's school fees for my grandchild and I am glad that she will not be sent back home this year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving out financial aid and I do not see anything that they do not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 12,000 from my transfer to pay school fees for my grandchild. I stettled on this since she had been sent back home and I did not have any other money to give her. Also, I spent KES 35000 in improving my house into a semi permanent and fixing steel door for security purposes. With this, cleaning my house is now easier and less time consuming.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the farm and I was about to complete the day’s work when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. I stopped to check it and I could believe not what I saw. It was the M-Pesa SMS saying that we had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was filled with a lot of happiness after seeing this. I started hearing some of my neighbors celebrating and saying that they had received the transfer. I now believed that it was true. I hurriedly finished up what I was doing and went back home happy because I knew that I was finally going to achieve my dreams. I gave thanks to God for this. I then informed one of my grandchildren in the evening when she got back from school and she so happy to hear this that she jumped up with joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in my life and that of my family. I have been able to buy the cow that I have always desired. This cow will enable us to get milk for our consumption and we can sell some. The money that I get from the sales, I will be able to use on other things such as paying school fees. Having built a kitchen, I can now comfortably prepare meals for my family. I will no longer be rained on and be beaten by the cold wind as I do so. The people’s donkeys no longer come to my compound and hence there are no more destructions. I have also been able to spray the crops on the farm against the destructive insects and hence they are doing well. Thank you GiveDirectly for coming through for me at the time when I had lost hope of ever doing the above.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
This transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I was able to buy a cow, fence my piece of land, build a kitchen house and I bought an insecticide for spraying the crops on the farm. The reason why I decided to use the money on the above especially to buy a cow and build the kitchen house, is because I have always wanted to do so for quite a long time and also because these are the things that I have always needed the most. I usually buy milk for my family’s consumption and it is costly. I have a make-shift kitchen that I had set it up beside the main house and covered with polythene bags. I have been using it as my kitchen and at times when it rains, it rains in it and hence it becomes hard to light up the fire and it is also cold to stay there cooking. I also wanted to fence my compound because I live by the roadside and people’s donkeys’ usually come to my compound and they end up causing some destructions. As much as I have always desired to do the above, I have not been in a position to do so due to lack of money. I am a widow and I have been struggling with payment of my children’s school fees with the little money that I have been getting. I had never gotten such a large sum of money before and hence I thank GiveDirectly for this.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a grandchild who joined form one last year and it has been my responsibility to pay her school fees, so when she joined secondary school the fee increased from sh 500 per year to sh 12,800 per year of which I am not able to pay alone. Therefore receiving this money means I will be able to pay school fees for my grandchild to get better education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of the day is when I am working in my farm, because I find it so encouraging to see the grops in my farm flourish well.A sign that we will have a abundant harvest when the season ends, hence more produce for sale.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
After the death of my husband, Life became so hard I could not even raise school fees for my own children who were in boarding school. This forced them to change schools and the only school they could enroll was a local day school. So been unable to take my children to a better school became a struggle to me
