How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am grateful to the organization because I was able to build a new spacious house which I would have never managed to build to date because when my husband passed away some years ago, he left me without anything tangible I would survive on. Apart from that, my child went to school amidst the society's expectations that the child would never make it to secondary school due to our economic situation by then. I also managed to buy a new sofa set worth Kes 24000 plus six sheep which I now rear with the expectations that they will multiply and increase in population going into the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The transfers from Give Directly were so helpful to most of the people particularly myself because first of all, I was able to get a new house which I would never have managed to build to date. I now have a lot of peace because I now have a decent place to stay in as compared to the old structure where I used to stay.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the cash transfers on paying school fees for my son who was in secondary school by then. What remained reminded went into the construction of a new house which I really so much. The house I had by then was so old and could collapse at any time. I also bought a music system together with a brand new Television for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I feel so proud and happy because I now have decent seats. I feel proud because I do not borrow seats from my neighbor anymore and I do not go through the shame of seeing my visitors and family members sitting on broken chairs.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While I was sleeping I heard a beep on my phone and wondered who could have sent me a message at such a time. I woke up, checked the phone and to my surprise it was a confirmation message that I had received money from GiveDirectly. It was such a joyous moment and I couldn't wait for morning so that I could purchase the things I needed.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
Previously, I only had four broken, wooden chairs which couldn't fit my family and at the same time they had broken down and it was risky sitting on them. When I received the first transfer, I used a portion of the money to purchase enough modern seats that fit my family. I also bought a solar lump which I use for lighting. I consider it cheaper in the long run because it only requires solar in order to operate, unlike the lantern lump which required kerosene in order to operate. In addition to that, I bought a steel door which is secure compared to the wooden door I had previously which I didn't consider to be safe since it was already broken and one could easily break into my house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy cement and poles so that I can repair my house. I will spend the remaining amount on starting my own salon.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I go to my farm to plough it. This makes me happy as I am able to grow maize and kales which suppliment my family's diet.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is that I do not have a stable source of income and at times my family go to bed hungry.
