How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I have rented an acre of land, I am hoping to have planted twice and use the profits to open a grocery shop so that we can rely on it for our basic needs. My daughter will be done with highschool as well, so I will not have any school fees to take care of.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love that Give Directly decided to give free and unconditional transfers because we all have different needs and we were given the chance to solve them on personal levels. This also made many people financially responsible and more creative with money, given that many of us have never had this much amounts at once, it was a great opportunity to explore with different business ideas.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my 2nd transfer, my daughter was already at home because of school fees arrears, so I used ksh 20000 to clear the balance and I was happy because she will be doing her exams without any stress. With ksh 5000, I rented one acre piece of land from my neighbour and planted maize and I will probably plant something else when harvest since rent is for one year, I used ksh 10000 to buy fertilizer and saved the rest of the money for food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 7 am and I had just woken up when suddenly I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I decided to check it and wow! I could not believe it when I opened the SMS and I read that we had received KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had promised us before. I was so delighted on seeing this and I immediately informed my husband who was preparing himself to leave about the good news. He was so happy too and we thanked God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. This is because having bought another cow, we now have enough milk for our consumption. We thus no longer incur the cost of buying some. We are planning to sell some of the milk and use the money that we will get from the sales in paying school fees for our children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 32000 of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy it because we didn't have a reliable source of milk. The cow that we usually rear is not that productive, when it dries, we are usually forced to buy milk from the passer-by milk vendors. Most of the farmers no longer sell milk in retail since their milk has been booked by the milk vendors. We had bought another cow before but unfortunately, it died leaving behind a young calf. The cow that we bought is also going to help us in getting money for paying school fees for our two children. One who recently joined the secondary school and the other who is still in primary school. We can sell some of the milk and get money. Other than that, we spent KES 8000 on buying the necessary school items for our child who was joining secondary school. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying some clothes for the children and ours too. We also bought some digging hoes for use at the farm since we usually depend on small-scale farming of maize and beans to earn a living. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for helping us. May God bless them.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Farming is my major economic activity. I am a mother of five struggling to see that my children have good access to their needs. I currently have one cow with a calve which I take as my assets. I have always tried to add more livestock but my household daily expenditures are overwhelming to us. This cash transfer to me is means improved farming. I am planning to spend KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow. Having two cows means I will have prolonged our farm milk production. I will be selling more litres a day and will also have enough for our consumption. I strive to have more income to help me educate my children. The extra income from milk sales and the calves will enable us comfortably pay our children's school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a mother of 5 children. My husband got saved in the past 4 months and this has brought happiness to my life. I am extremely happy because there has been peace and harmony since my husband got salvation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been practicing mixed farming for my entire life. I loved it since I do not have a formal job to earn a living. I gained stability in my household through the sales of maize from my farm. It used to do well then. In the last ten years, maize disease broke out and since then I have not had good yields again. This not only brought food shortage to our family but it cut our source of income. To me the biggest challenge I have is the maize disease we currently have in our area.
