How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it was before because I now own a big semi-permanent house. I had started building this house sometimes back but due to lack of enough money, I was stuck along the way. It had become a laughing stock in my neighborhood since people saw me as a poor planner who built castles in the air. I am glad I was able to shut them down when I finally completed constructing the house. I also made a good harvest after hiring labor and buying a few farm inputs. This meant cultivating a larger area of land and ensuring that I got healthier crops. I am glad I have adequate food that will last us up to the next season. I even have an option of selling some bags and earn more money which will help me in settling the other needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly does well in supporting the poorest communities in the rural areas. We are usually forgotten because people think life in the rural areas is cheaper compared to urban life. Most of the people who received these transfers were able to change their lives in different ways by doing several projects that they could not have done before GiveDirectly came into our lives. Generally, the living standards of the people in this village have improved. I have not seen anything that GiveDirectly is not doing well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfers to complete my semi-permanent house which I had started building in 2016. Right now the house is complete courtesy of Give Directly. The house is spacious enough to accommodate all my family members. The previous one was too small, I could not even host a visitor for one day. I always felt ashamed whenever visitors came to my house because that meant asking for shelter for my children from my neighbors for the entire period that the visitors stayed in my house. I am glad that is no longer the case and always thank Give Directly for helping me finish the building that took me longer to complete.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means my marriage is going to be strengthened. I have plans of paying dowry and also improve on my sugar cane farming.

The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I am back from casual work and finds my family at home.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life was being unable to attend school like my age mates. My parents could not afford to pay my school fees, I had to drop out of school and start doing odd jobs. This has really affected my living standards.
