How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Having added two cows on my farm that cost over 40000KES has really changed my life a great deal. I count myself as one of the luckiest beneficiaries as the transfer I received came when needed the most. I also managed to clear school fees payment for my children who are fully in school currently. This would not have been possible if I had never received the money. I am much grateful and hoping that the progress I have made will be sustainable even in years to come.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, all that has been going on in our village since GiveDirectly came in is amazing. A lot of changes have been witnessed and in my capacity, I am thankful to have been accorded all rights to budget my own money and spent it on everything that I needed most for my household. I don't have any complaint at all, and like every other person in the village says it has been perfectly executed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the second transfer I received, I spent 46000KES on livestock. I managed to obtained two cows each costing 23000KES. I needed to add them to the herd I had been having as this is the most convenient investment to bank on as we have wider grazing grounds. With the remaining amount, I paid school fees for my children and the small remaining amount on obtaining a new plastic water reservoir which I am currently using in collecting and storing rainwater.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 9 in the morning when I was preparing for the day, then I heard my phone vibrating continuously. Since I was curious, I decided to check who it could be. I couldn't believe what I saw! It was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I felt wow and started planning on how best I could utilize the cash.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now hopeful and happier after purchasing the livestock that I am now keeping in my homestead. I have been yearning to own them for years but I could not afford them since they were very costly. I settled in purchasing them because with the pair of oxen they would be of great help in my agricultural activities. I will o longer have to hire people to plough my farm any more, instead, I will save the money and cater to some other household expenses. Also, I will be hiring the pair to my neighbours and generate an income. In addition, with the dairy cow, I will be getting plenty milk for free, whereby half of it will be for my family consumption and the remaining litres I will supply it to the nearest trading centres and get an income as well. I am positive that this will really uplift my living standard and I will no longer be straining in meeting my family needs like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part a larger portion of my first transfer on buying some livestock such as a pair of oxen and a dairy cow worthy of KES 45000. I have been aspiring to keep them in my compound for years but I could not afford it. I also bought a big water tank at KES 7000. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a temporary pleasant farmer growing maize and peas for my household consumption. Due to the dry weather conditions, we receive the long rains in March and April every year. During this time getting oxen to hire to plow my farm is very hard since they are in high demand. I am planning to spend $ 600 on purchasing my oxen and ox- plow to assist me in the preparation of my farm. This will assure me a high harvest hence enough food for my family. The remaining amount will assist me in seeking proper medical care for my children who have sickle cell anemia.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day waking up healthy with my children despite their health challenges give me joy and hope for a better future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It always the joy of every parent to see their children healthy and well, this has not been my case as a result of lack of adequate finance to seek proper medical care for my 2 children who suffer from sickle cell anemia. Therefore, I consider the lack of finance to obtain proper medication for my children as the biggest hardship.
