How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been able to build a new house to live in with my family. I couldn't afford to buy anything to build at my own cost, thanks to GiveDirectly because I am no longer worried when it rains. My previous house was grass thatched with no hope of upgrading, but now I am happily living in an iron roofed and decent house. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making my dream come true.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in every stage of their operations. Its perfectly done and there are no complains or dissatisfaction from us. I do not see anything that it doesn't do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent KES 30000 to buy two cows that I am currently keeping in my homestead. These are assets to me that will help me in the near future to meet my financial needs as they reproduce and multiply. I also spent KES 12000 to buy new bedding, a bed and a mattress. I can now afford to sleep comfortably unlike before when I was sleeping on mats and worn out rags. I also took a portion of the money to hire some labourers to work in my farm. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my household basic needs and other expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My biggest difference is that my son is now back to work as a driver, for he is the breadwinner of the family and his job had been suspended because his licence had not been renewed and we were not able to bail him out of this situation and he was jobless for some months and clear the cost until I received the transfer. The support has enabled him to clear the renewal fee and has now resumed. To me, this is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the notification in the morning. On checking to confirm, it was from GiveDirectly informing me that I had received the money that for long I had anxiously been waiting for. I was very happy and joyful for getting such a fortune and thankful to GiveDirectly for fulfilling their promise to us.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to pay for the cost of renewing my sons driving licence which had remained invalid for a long period, and this is the only job that my son was engaged in for a daily income. His job was suspended until I got the transfer and we are happy as a family since he is back to work. I also bought a pair of oxen and an ox-plough that would facilitate my farming effectively since I had been hiring from my neighbors and this was costly to me. Through this pair, I am assured of early land preparation and timely cultivation for abundant yields. I will also increase the acreage of my farm to utilise it maximumly. I also bought Iron sheets, building poles and other materials in order to construct a new house for my family. The house which I was previously living in was grass thatched and it would leak during rainy seasons and also to me it was not giving a good impression at all. I am now in the process of building a new house through the support from GiveDirectly. I also acquired a knapsack sprayer so as to spray pesticides for my crops when affected by pests and also for my animals, for previously I was using used cans to spray for my crops.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The greatest ambition is to start poultry farming and vegetable production. This is because, I have seen a big market gap in the nearby towns namely (Guruguru, Mariakani and Bamba). Receiving this money will mean that I will be able to start my desired projects. These projects will help me cater for my family needs. I will also use part of my transfers to construct a spacious house for my myself because the one I am living in is very small to accommodate my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am always happy in the morning. This is because I feel more energized to take the days activities that will earn me income to feed my family. Since my work is within the village, I first go to the farm in the morning and when I am done, I rest for utmost three hours before I embark on the other day's job of constructing houses for my neighbors to get pay.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Securing a good job has been the biggest challenge in my life. This is due to lack of education. I am a standard five drop out and all my entire life, I have been doing casual jobs that earn me very little. I decided to do farming in our village but due to little rains, the harvests are not sustainable. This means that I have to struggle all the time to feed and educate my children
