How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing water tank is the one of the new goal that I did not have before receiving the transfer. We used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water and it was so tiresome. I found it worth to invest on this because I would be able to save time to do other activities at home.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better house and to buy dairy cows. The registration process was done so well without discrimination. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 23,000 to purchase a water tank for storing clean water for drinking and domestic uses. We used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water. This was so tiresome and time-consuming. Whenever we hired someone to bring it to us, it could cost not less than KES 100.This was so costly for me because I do not have any income generating activity. I spent KES 1,000 for exams fees for my three young children in primary school, They were so happy because the sat for their exams and gotten good results. KES 5000 on rent and food for my son who is in polytechnic studying. I spent KES 7,000 to purchase two sacks of maize for my family. The rest of the money I spent on other household items and cloths for my children. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning as I was doing the morning cleaning up before moving out to my usual chores. I was really thankful after confirming the receipt of the first transfer as all my hopes had been on the transfer to accomplish a lot in our household. My husband was still taking his breakfast, and on showing him, he was so excited too. We thanked God for the great provision together as this was a confirmation that the plans we had will be kicking off before long.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Even though my son is not in school yet, it is a great feeling that we finally have plans and assurance that he will soon be starting his college studies. With the first transfer in, we have done a lot, right from the huge investment in livestock, settling financial obligations for my two younger sons, and also obtaining enough foodstuff for the household. The biggest difference though is the relief everyone currently has after deciding to finally equip my son for college admission. He now feels the love that had been elusive, slowly forgetting the empty promises we used to give, and at least assured that the promise is finally being honored.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After completing his secondary school studies, my son could not get immediate support from us that could have enabled him to pick his college studies. We kept promising him that things will soon get better, hoping to get some extra money that we were never sure of the source. We had been praying hard over it and we are finally glad to see our prayer answered by GiveDirectly. With the first transfer, I managed to obtain pieces of equipment necessary for his admission to the college worth KES6000, as he will be joining later this year. I decided to spend the other KES32000 on livestock after obtaining an in-calf heifer and a goat. We had also been buying milk whenever we don't get it from the immediate family members and I saw it good to invest in livestock with the hope that I will be selling the surplus in the future. With the remaining amount, I paid KES1000 on settling school fees for the younger kids currently in primary school and used the remaining KES7600 on foodstuff for the household.
