How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because, through the transfers, I managed to achieve most of my longtime dreams. First, I was able to construct a decent permanent house which had bales been my dream. The previous one was in a very poor state and I was certain in few days to come it would even collapse. In every rainy season, we used to seek shelter in every corner of the village, and sometimes we couldn't succeed hence ending up being rained on. My children could always be exposed to cold especially a night hence affecting them healthwise. I am glad this is all gone courtesy of GiveDirectly. Secondly, the fact that I managed to clear school fees for my children makes me so ambitious as a parent. Because they have been on and off in school due to the huge school fee balances. I am extremely excited they are now studying without any disturbances
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in my village in such a way that every household was visited. Also, no one was left out in the enrolment process provided you deserved. Also, there was no discrimination of either tribe, age, and religion. On the other hand, I do not see any sector that GiveDirectky failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some bricks and sand with an intention of constructing my house which I had initially started. I settled on constructing a new one becasue the initial one had leaky food and we had to seek shelter from friends during the rain season. Also, I cleared school fees for any children who are KES 15000 so that they can study without any interference. To add to that, I saved some little cash that I can sustain for a couple of days. Since I am jobless, I used the remaining amount of money, to buy enough foodstuffs,

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8 in the evening when I was having dinner with my family then my phone started ringing. I was a bit surprised since I was not expecting a message from anyone at that particular hour. I then decided to check only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew I would achieve a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having have renovated my house has brought the biggest difference in my daily life. Previously, I used to sleep under a grass-thatched house that was so leaky and whenever it could rain, I used to seek shelter from my neighbors together with my family. Also, some of my properties were not safe and some being destroyed by the rodents. The whole of my life was so miserable. I am now a happy soul because the change GiveDirectly has brought into my life is incredible. I longer have to worry about the heavy downpours or even the rodents.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer on buying some building materials such as some pieces of iron sheets, timber, nails, and some bags of cement. This was for the renovation of my house which was in poor condition, it had a leaky roof which was stressful especially during the winter season. To add to that, I cleared the school fees arrears for my children since they were approaching their main exams. Also, with the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my children and some other household items that I was lacking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I believe education is the key to a good life. My ambition is to educate my grandchildren so that I can give them a brighter future. This will save them the agony of ending up as casual labourers like their parents. Receiving this money therefore means, I will purchase a pair of oxen and goats for rearing. This is because goats multiply very fast and they are drought resistant. I will use the oxen to scale up farming and also hire them at a fee. This will make it easy to finance their education. I will also renovate my house which has a leaking roof.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I wake up fully of energy. This gives me the strength to hustle through the day to provide for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is my biggest hardship due to unstable source of income. Jobs are hard to come and at my age it is even more difficult. This has resulted to the inability to provide for my family fully. Recently, my son succumbed to malaria because I lacked money to seek better healthcare. This really pains me because I feel I have failed as a parent.
