How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I do not have a reliable job, so in the coming year and beyond, I am planning to start a saloon and a cosmetic business. Once I achieve this, I will be able to support my spouse with all our family obligations. Also, this will lead to quality education for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by not discriminating against anyone despite our tribe, age, and religious differences. Every household was attended to and received the cash transfers sooner than expected. Therefore, for now, I do not see anything that needs to be changed on their end.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on settling a debt of $100 with a friend. I was always frustrated since it had taken longer than expected. This was a result of the financial constraints that I have been through. My spouse being the sole breadwinner, it was not easy for him to make ends meet since he relied on odd jobs. I now have peace of mind and am happier since all the frustration is now over. To add to that, I paid fees of $150 to my three children, who are in primary school. My spouse and I have been struggling to raise their fees, which could lead them to be sent home regularly. Hence, they could miss classes, which could equally affect their performance. As a mother, I am so grateful to see them back to school and continuing with their studies, which is an assurance of fair performance. Again, I bought building poles, iron sheets, and nails, which were specifically for the addition of one room since my house was small. I am now glad that it can now accommodate all six of my family members, unlike before, when my children had to shelter at their grandmother's place. I feel I have protected their privacy as well as my dignity as a parent. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient food for my family, which took us almost a month.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Despite the fact that I received a message with no indication that it came from GiveDirectly, I was easily convinced that it was the transfer because the amount indicated in the message was exactly what I expected. I was at home at the time, with my children and other relatives, with whom I couldn't share the news. I later shared it with my family in the evening as we discussed our goals and then withdrew when everything was in place.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Paying school fees for my three children and providing them with all of the school supplies they required are the most significant differences in my daily life, as I am now relieved and happy to see my children wear new uniforms and not miss any classes. This support has restored my faith in them because I have always felt bad seeing them at home while other children who are their friends are at school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had a lot planned for the transfer, and when it arrived, I made sure to spend it on my enlisted items. I needed goats for a long-term project, but I only got one from a friend who was selling it for $20. Because I am still looking for one, I have set aside money that I will use once I find the desired breed. In addition, I spent $45 on a mattress to replace the worn-out bedding I had been using. I currently have three children in school and had to purchase school uniforms for the two whose uniforms were tattered because I had purchased one new one before the school year ended. I also spent $30 on groceries for my family of seven, $70 on new clothes for my five children, and $50 on school fees for the three who are currently enrolled. I used the remaining funds to pay for a plot of land that my co-wife and I are purchasing because our previous plot was insufficient for the two of us to build our homes. I am glad she agreed to move to the new piece and is now working on building her new houses.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have three children schooling at Sosodem primary. They each have school fee balances of $ 48for the whole year. In total, I am supposed to pay $162 for this year. The children have been at home for the past two weeks now due to the school fees balances. Their performance has gone down and one of the children wanted to be a doctor in the future. I will use $ 424 to clear the balances and also prepay the school fees for next year. My desire is for the children to remain at school and concentrate on their studies to achieve their objectives. I will also buy 10 goats as an investment. My first child is in class four so the investigation will help me to have enough fees for his secondary education four years to come. The goats will cost $ 500 . Thanks for Give directly program because now I have a blueprint of how my children's education will be.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The county government of Kilifi through the Disaster management department brought relief food to our village on 1st November 2022. That day, my family had gone without food for two days. I got 8kg of maize flour and it last for one week. The food was little but I am happy because it made my family to have three meals per day for a week. The relief food program brought joy to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a substance farmer and it is three years now without rain in our village. Farming would provide food for my family of seven for the whole year. I normally do farming for all 2 acres piece of land and harvest approximately 10 bags of maize each 90kg. My husband works as a school bus driver in Nairobi. He earns around $ 200 per month. The money used to support school fees payment for our three children who are at Sosodem primary. Right now the money caters to food only. Every child is supposed to pay $ 48 per year. It is now a challenge to raise the school fees. This has caused them to be off of school for two weeks now due to the school fees balances. Raising school fees is the current challenge I am facing.
