How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the second transfer, I intend to maintain and even grow the business I recently founded. I currently keep a few kilograms of the fish, and my goal is to eventually buy a full bag containing 30 kilograms, which is both cheaper and more profitable. As of right now, the business  is able to meet our demands, and I even manage to save $2 every day. If all goes according to plan, I should be able to save $10 per day from the earnings.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe Give Directly had a terrific concept when they decided to give us cash without any conditions. I have seen many changes in the village, from more stable financial situations brought on by investments in businesses to improved housing. I have to acknowledge that thanks to these transfers, my life has been better. On the other hand, the organization is doing everything properly, therefore I would encourage them to keep up the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After using the first transfer to successfully build a new stable, respectable home, we agreed with my spouse to utilize some of our second transfer to pay off the significant school fee arrears that our children owed the school. Our four primary school-aged children ended up owing the school $250 since we were unable to pay their tuition because my spouse who was the sole breadwinner was not lucky to secure job for quite sometime. Thank God, through the second transfer we managed to clear the arrears. Additionally, we spent $80 on two goats with the intention of raising them and eventually selling some of them to raise our household income. I used $120 to start a fish-selling business. We have seen a slight improvement in our standard of living since then, and the business is steadily coming up. We used to struggle to buy breakfast, so I'm delighted we can now afford a full day's worth of food and even put aside $2 per day. We used the remaining $80 to buy food for our family. We appreciate the help because without it, we could not have accomplished what we have so far.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My phone had been off the time transfers were sent. I was charging it when I heard my neighbours talking in high tones that GiveDirectly had sent us money. I could not wait for my phone to complete charging, so I unplugged it and restarted it. When I checked my inbox, I was greatly overjoyed because I had also received my transfer. I waited until the next day and withdrew the money, I was yearning to renovate my house which was weak and nearly collapsing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My living house was in a pitiable state because I could not afford to buy the required materials for renovation. The walls were weak and the roof was old and dilapidated. It could easily collapse and I was really worried it might fall on me in case of a heavy downpour. Upon receiving the transfer, my goal was to buy enough building materials to renovate it. I am at peace now because I managed to rebuild it and it now looks habitable. I am no longer worried about rain. Even if it rains for months, I will always be safe with my family and this is the biggest difference in my daily life so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Raising school fees for my children has been a challenge for me. They were frequently sent home for failing to pay for them on time. When I received the transfer, I paid Ksh. 11000 and cleared the arrears. I am glad that they were allowed back to continue with their studies. Besides, I will have ample time to save for the next payment on time. After clearing the school fees, I embarked on renovating my house. It was in a bad shape and required urgent renovation to prevent it from collapsing. I bought the materials required which include 18 bags of cement and stones and paid for the labour. Seeing my house in a stable and decent condition gives me peace of mind. I spent the remaining amount on buying a small plastic water storage tank at Ksh 2500. I can store enough water for domestic use since we are at times faced with a water shortage.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been a housewife all my adult life. I take pride in having raised my children. The time has come for me to spread my wings. I intend to start a grocery store nearby. I have hope that the income shall be great and it will keep me occupied.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful for the don't of life and a family that loves me. I believe that all the money problems will one day pass and my children will prosper.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our children keep being sent home for fee arrears. This crushes my spirit, especially when I know that there is nothing much I can do about it. I hope my business will give me someone to see them through school comfortably.
