How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal for the upcoming year is to establish a livestock business, focusing primarily on goats, as I now have six of them. I believe this venture will generate enough income to sustain me through school and support my brother’s education, even after the project ends. This will help me continue pursuing the mechanical course I recently started, and I’m excited to soon acquire the skills that will enhance my life. I’m looking forward to building a future for the family I have yet to start. I know that once I graduate, I won’t have to struggle as much in my daily hustle because I’ll have the skills needed to find better job opportunities. This is the key to transforming my life and my household’s future, ensuring that my children won’t have to endure the hardships I’ve faced.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For a long time, I lived a miserable life when it came to where I slept. I spent years sleeping on an old mat with torn sheets, which left me waking up with fatigue and pain, especially in my spine. This constant discomfort affected my productivity at work and took a toll on me both emotionally and psychologically. I had lost hope of ever getting a decent bed. I offer motorcycle services in my village, but it’s barely profitable, and what I earn only covers the basics. Recently, however, I used about $68 to buy a comfortable bed and mattress for myself since I am a bachelor with no children. Now, I sometimes oversleep because of how comfortable the bedding is, and I can’t express enough gratitude to this organization for making this possible. I also purchased a solar panel for $25, and I’m paying off the remaining amount in $0.5 instalments each day. Now, I have enough light at night, and I can easily charge my phone, which used to be a struggle. Additionally, I bought a chicken for $4, which I’m now raising at home with the hope that it will hatch and multiply, bringing more benefits to my life. I used the remaining $5 to buy food that has sustained me for several days as I continue my daily hustle.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal for the upcoming year is to establish a livestock business, focusing primarily on goats. I believe that this venture will generate sufficient income to sustain myself through school and support my brother's education, even after the project concludes. I intend to utilize future transfers to kick-start this business. I am grateful for the organization's support as it has provided me with the opportunity to acquire skills that will enhance my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Previously, I worked as a boda boda rider, but now I'm enrolled in a mechanical course to improve my prospects. I strongly believe in expanding my skill set to secure better employment opportunities. Before receiving these transfers, I had no means of income to support myself. I am happy that I have been able to purchase a motorcycle through monthly payments and now I cover my course fees with the transfers. I allocated $27 to purchase a small goat, which I believe will prove useful in the future. Additionally, $34 went towards purchasing food for my family during Christmas festivities, and another $34 was utilized to settle my brother's pending school fee debt. The remaining funds were allocated to cover my mechanical course fees. This project has injected hope into my life, and I eagerly anticipate the future with optimism.

My ultimate goal is to fulfill my long-standing dream of pursuing a course in mechanical engineering. Despite facing significant financial constraints, I am determined to make this dream a reality with the invaluable support of GiveDirectly. My plan is to save every monthly transfer I receive, and by the beginning of next year, I hope to have accumulated enough funds to enroll in college. How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had intended to save money and use my transfer to enroll in a mechanic course. Though my original ambition was thwarted by my arrest, I am still hopeful. Once I have a consistent income, I will be able to start saving my earnings and utilize them to pursue a mechanics course. I value the mechanic course because it will provide me with skills that will allow me to earn a consistent income to support my family. As a result, if I complete the mechanic course, taking care of my family will no longer be a challenge.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I got my last three months' transfers when I was in jail. Because my friend was killed in our village, even though I was innocent, I was the first suspect because we had been together during that day. I am happy that, despite the difficulties I went through at the time, the monthly transfers were quite helpful to me. After three months in jail, my family could partially survive on my transfers. Although I still find it difficult to catch up after selling some of my possessions, such as my goats, I am hoping that I will be able to bounce back from my losses. I am incredibly appreciative of GiveDirectly's ongoing financial support.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is doing a great job in helping people like us. Since birth, I had never received any form of aide from any organization, I feel happy because I am able to earn something to help sustain me, and there is nothing they are doing bad.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With my most recent transfer, I bought a goat. I initially had plans of buying a few livestock, but I had no money, but the transfer was of great help. With the money that I received of $30, I managed to buy a goat worth $32 upon topping up the $2 that I had. I have put plans in place for rearing the goat and I believe that it will give birth to more offspring and enable me to sell and earn some money from the proceeds to help me through my dreams of training as a mechanical engineer. I feel so happy about this program knowing that my dreams will finally come true.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was looking after the animals when money came in and I felt a huge relief as soon as I saw the message and this is because I really needed the money at that moment and also the fact that I honestly did not expect the money to arrive then.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
In my own opinion I'm very glad that finally I got the push to begin investing in poultry farming because this project is going to offer me some form of sustainability when it comes to myself especially since I do not have any job.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
when I received the money I decided to split it in half and I used the first KES 600 and decided to buy three hens which accumulated to five since I already owned two before. The whole idea was for me to begin investing in poultry farming. Afterwards I decided to use the remaining half which was KES 600 and bought four packets of maize flour because nutrition was also a challenge.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been living at my in-laws house for five years now working as a caretaker. The little money I get from this casual labour is not enough to start any meaningful and profitable business. Getting this money from GiveDirectly would mean I start a chicken rearing business at home. I will spend the first two transfers to set up the business and the consequent transfers on buying more chicken and their feeds. I believe this business will be a source of income and eventually I will have something to depend on. This will go along way in solving the problem of hunger which has been a big challenge in my family. I will also spend some of the money I will be saving per year to build a two bedroom house because I have none at the moment. This would bring happiness and peace of mind to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being in good health and have enough food for my family gives me alot of joy and satisfaction. I always strive to make sure that my family have something to eat despite the challenges we are facing everyday.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our area has been affected by drought which has caused by shortage of rain. This has brought lack of water and pasture for the livestock. I have to walk 2 kilometers to the nearest water pan.
Lack of food is also another challenge whereby I can go up to two days without food. This has affected my health as I am growing weak everyday.
