How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am growing old day by day and because of this, I do not have any new goals since I just want to enjoy my old days in peace. For this reason, my major concern is to make sure that I have food and clean clothes and for my family to live a happy life.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly officers were polite during enrollment. They would repeat what people did not understand and made sure that we've internalized the message. The money that we received transformed our lives and upgraded our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer, I spent KES 30000 from it to improve my house by cementing the floors, spent KES 10000 on farming, and KES 12000 on foodstuffs and clothes. I hired a tractor for land preparation and planting purposes and bought some hybrid maize and beans seeds. In addition, improving my house by cementing the floors will enable my grandchildren to take less time when helping me to clean it. Apart from this, my clothes are no longer dusty like they used to be.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had attended one of my relatives' burial in Transmara and it was during the proceedings when I heard my phone ring. I immediately knew that it was an incoming message and I requested my helper to help me read it as I was with her. My heart was filled with joy when she informed me that GiveDirectly had sent the promised money and I forgot that I was in a morning state. Since I would not wait any longer to have them in my wallet, I requested her to help me withdraw them the following day and I am very grateful to GiveDirectly for brightening my day during the hard times we were facing as a family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Being able to build a more decent house for my family despite my old age is the biggest difference in my daily life. I am now happy that I will be living in a house with a cemented floor and I will depend less on my grandchildren to help me in dusting it. This would not have been possible on my own and I am glad that there is an organization that still values people and their opinions more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I decided to build a more decent house for my family when I received my first transfer. The walls are made of timber and the floor has been cemented and the only thing remaining is to fix windows and a door and I have so far spent KES 30000 on it. I decided on this since I am old and I am no longer able to walk for a long distance looking for water and clay soil to use in dusting my current house. In addition, I bought a heifer worth 15000 as an investment that I can rely on in the coming years when it has reproduced. I will be selling part of the milk and using the income to meet our basic needs. Using the remaining KES 9000, I bought one sack of maize for our consumption, some hybrid maize seeds, fertilizers and hired a tractor to help me in tilling our land in preparation for planting.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a financial stability for my family for I will purchase a dairy cow (usd 200).I will used some of the milk for the household and the rest in generating extra income . My husband is disable (deaf) and I am left as the bread winner . Albeit this,I am aged and not able to fend for the family as I depend on subsistence farming for a living.I intent to use 100usd of the transfers to attend to the farm, 200usd to cement the floor of my living room and the rest of the transfers on purchasing food for the household .
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy in the morning for I am alive and able to fend for my family. I look after 2 grandchildren who are my source of happiness .
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity has been my biggest hardship. The harsh climate has made my farm so unproductive therefore less food for my household. We at times stay without food or eat less than usual.
